The gourami was put in a 20 long with feeder guppies to chase till i can find a 30 or 36 bow then itll go in there with something less aggressive maybe a short bodied senegal or 2

Looking good! The male looks really fat though. Is he eating too much? Otherwise I might suspect worms. The other possibility is that's a gravid female. I can't tell from the photo.

I have a soft spot for Columbian tetras. They look like tiny piranhas (and eat like them) but when the light catches them just so they glow.

It's good that your pleco is a dwarf. Wood-eaters produce a whole lot of waste. He's cute!

If you go to Planet Catfish's Cat-E-Log you may be able to identify him. Look under L and LDA numbers. https://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/

Pleco Planet is a great resource as well but their website is currently undergoing renovation.

Looking again, I suspect your Male Acara is female.

It could be female but the fina are just so long and its the one that shakes plants and twitches at the other and i think its just fat. My kids tend to think the poor fish are starving always

But thats also why i got the columbians. They have turned out to be great tankmates. Had a threadfin acara with them for a few years and trailers were fully intact

The acara i was sure is a male started about 1/2 inch smaller than the other but has since outpaced it by a good inch 4.5" vs 3.5" on the one i thought was the female

Gender differences should become more obvious as they mature. Do you have some recent, very clear photos of both of them in profile?

I would suggest locking up the fish food. Your kids mean well but they are loving your fish to death. The consequences are obesity, fatty liver disease and dirty water. The fish will always beg for food and act like they're starving so you have to police how much they get.
