They are spendy locally in the NW. $50-$90 depending on size. Mine was $50.totally worth it though.

Axolotl Color and Genetics
I could be wrong, but I have never heard of one!
For example ..

This is a tiger salamander larvae. Looks almost identical. A lot of salamanders look like axis when larval.
aclockworkorange;5030175; said:No, trust us, they're real. Full grown adults.
muffywrx;5030177; said:Mine are wild type. They are more green with speckles, even non GFPs are but with more olive or brownish coloring. I'm still guessing you saw a larval sal (very common for pet stores) but would love to be proven wrong (though all the axolotl forums/sites I've been to mention nothing about this tiger pattern)
The more aggressive larger (possibly tiger striped) type are not the acutal axolotls. I think there is something called a mud puppy or something that is similar but fits this description and i know it does get larger. but is different.
muffywrx;5030180; said:Lol, I know axolotls are real, this is my thread. but the picture I posted was a tiger salamander. Closely related. different genus. One metamorphisizes, the other (axo) doesn't.
good job doing a little homework before you bought. Any thoughts on if you have boys, girls, both?
aclockworkorange;5030196; said:Ok, I did the research. The more expensive species available locally Justin are NOT axolotls, they are known as Anderson's salamander, Echinotriton andersoni. They are closely related to axolotls, and they also live their entire live in the water (they don't turn into land dwellers). They are indeed bigger, so I feel good that I suggested you not put one in a 10 gallon.
