but having to service a filter every 6 weeks is still pretty minor..

its still just one big sponge filter with a high flow rate nothing more

if you want water movement add some power heads or internal filters

I could spend 500 and buy a commercial RO unit and filter the tank through the RO each day.

All joking aside, I think the thing looks cool, and has some nifty little gadgets. However its kinda like a MAC it cost more and does the same thing but looks way cooler. As far as the nefty gadgets, any body remember when dvds came out and there was all the talk about the special features? Where are these today? if your lucky 1 in 10 movies will have alternate ending? I have not seen 1 single movie not even a porn movie that has alternate camera angles, basically you get trailers and commentary, big whoop; I never watch them.

Until someone can prove the G does better then any other filter I can't say I would buy one. Sure it looks nice but it would be under the cabinet. Kinda like a chromed out engine sure its sexy to look at but how often do you see it? as far as flow goes I could careless I want my filter to suck up junk and remove bio waste, the whole reason power heads where invented was flow.

Fishkeeping is more fun the less filter cleaning you need to do
the fx5 maybe good a mech filteraton but it's rubbish at bio filteration
you can run a 2080 for 6 month without cleaning I do it all the time you would be lucky to run a fx5 6 weeks before cleaning
lots of filter changes per year or just 2 I know which I would rather do

You dont have to clean it for six months because its not dirty... its not dirty because it sucks , and has no flow so it doesnt pick anything up....

the job of a filter is to get dirty , as aposed to your tank.....:screwy:

And actually im pretty sure it has the best bio media out of any canister filter.... due to its size. You need own a fx5 man, youll soon eat your words in a hurry

^ Actually he wont. He is 200% against fluval filters. Talks nothing but crap about them.

I have to spend even MOOORREEE Money on top of the expensive Eheim filters or Fluval G filter? Are you NUTS! Power heads create current and get clogged up with junk. Internal filters are junk compared to canisters. I only have so many outlets and only want the tank to consume X range amount of power. I want a filter to "filter", "Get Dirty" and create current in the tank. Thats how I know its working. lol

The Fx5's 6 liters of media is a lot for a filter and you really don't need any more than that unless you have a huge tank heavily overstocked, even then bacteria would cultivate in the tank.

its still just one big sponge filter with a high flow rate nothing more

You must have missed the 6 liters of bio media.

Also, you can buy some 20PPI foam cut to fit in the outsides of the baskets and you have more surface area than any filter out there for fine particle filtration. You can't do that with the G series. Stupid pleated filters.

fluval are or were a pile of junk

they seam to have pulled all the stops out with the G to try and convince people they are in the game

fluval budget
eheim higher end

thats the way it has been in the past by fluval putting the G on to the market they are trying to brake into the higher end filter market hence the higher price tag

if the G had a low price tag it wouldn't be getting to the market its intended for

the reason the FX5 gets dirty is not because its a great filter its because it has next to no bio media

bio media brakes down waste over time something mech filtration cant do

result

crap filled dirty FX5 that clogs up
nice clean 2080 that brakes down waste

FACT

but you filter experts would know this :D

I don't really get this argument the G and the FX5 are two completely different filters, why compare them? You keep saying the G is awesome and the FX5 is junk, yada yada, who cares, they're made to do different tasks.

The price of the FX5 was much higher when it was introduced too. Saying the G is expensive because that is the market it is intended for is ridiculous. Its more like its expensive because the research and product development hasn't been paid for yet. Give it a couple of years, I bet you'll find it for less than half the price it is now.

edit to add: fact of the matter is, people will buy whatever is the best bang for the buck. At $225 shipped, the FX5 seems to be that product...and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of people have fx5's.

exactly my point if the fx5 was priced high would it have sold as many units

fluval done a smart move by selling the fx5 cheap it gained them part of the market now living on the big bang for the buck as you put the fx5 was meant to give it has raised the price of the G hoping it will sell
