The "Profit of 10 Gallons" project

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Every other thread on this forum are made by people asking and discussing what is the most profitable fish to breed, and how much you can profit from it. For myself, I have never thought much about profiting from the hobby, though it would of course be nice to get some extra cash for financing the hobby.
I guess some of the most profitable fish out there probably are Discus and Rays for example. But both are far from being easy to keep.

So, the other day, I was wondering how much a person can profit from a small, simple tank with 'easy to keep' fish. I thought this might be an interesting challenge.
Last Saturday I took a 10g tank I had in storage, put gravel in it, filled it up with 60% cycled water from my 125g and 40% tap water, put a filter and a heater in it.

Last Monday I then went to a LFS and bought 3x Guppies (1m 2fm) and put in the tank. I also put some plants in it, including a handful of Java fern.

So, in this thread I am going to let you people observe how much exactly I can profit from this small, simple tank of mine. I will keep you posted on how much I spend, and how much I profit.

Of course I will post pictures of the tank and the fish.

If there are any questions, just ask. :)

3x Guppies bought = -$18
Java fern bought = -$9
-----------------------
Profit (04/13/12) = -$27

Well, some news. One of the guppy females gave birth today, in the tank though. I had put them both in a breeder tank but they both stopped eating and became very "dull", so I took them out of there to wait a bit. There is java moss in the tank so I hope there will be some survivors. I put the other one, which looks like she is gonna explode, in the breeder tank, and I hope I will have fry in 1 or 2 days. In a couple weeks I will be getting a few more females and a couple more males in the tank.
Interesting project.
I see you add to your cost on most things, but I don't see an addition for the breeder tank.
Can you sum up the total for everything up to date.

Thank You
-Jill :)

This is a really cool idea. I am very interested to see the results.

Thanks

Great idea. I'm a new member today and I'm glad this forum has a breeding section. I have some guppies, mollies, and glofish that are breeding and my LFS wants to have me supply them (which makes me happy as I don't want an overstocked tank and really enjoy raising the fry) but we haven't worked out any prices. Subscribed =)
Welcome to MFK! And thanks.
Me too.

Heres the whole cost of things, I will mark the ancistrus and breeding tank as "bought", even though I had them. I'll play fair. :)

3x Guppies bought = -$18
Java fern bought = -$9
2x Ancistrus bought = -$20
Breeder tank bought = -$10
-----------------------
Profit (14/05/12) = -$57

Looks like it may be a while until I break even. Haha.

And thank you all for great interest in this thread, I'll keep you updated!

An update, I was at my moms this weekend, and the fish are at my dads. Well, the multi-port (I think that is the right word for it in english) broke down apparently so the fish had no filteration and heating over the weekend... And the female gave birth, only like 3 or 4 survivor fry.

Pics soon.

wouldnt that 57$ you spent be expenses, not profit? you will have to make 57$ to break even.

the easiest way to make profit is to have a small tank outside or a large bucket of the sorts, keep some live plants in it and the fish will just eat bugs and whatever other gunk falls into the outdoor tank. no money on electricity because the sun is natural and the rain water = added water and the plants filter it.

I've never thought of that.
Good idea.:)

it says NEGATIVE 57.... and i'm sure guppies would be thrilled outside in iceland lol

they still need a heater....

and maybe they look a little sick cause the tank isnt cycled it just says you used water from a cycled tank.... that doesn't really mean anything the filter has to be cycled

either way this is really cool, post some pics soon I'm excited to see this!
