Too hot to pass by - dwarf ID

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have scoured the internet for a dwarf Crenicichla with orange through its dorsal. The only thing I come up with are past threads from here on MFK about female C. wallaci with orange-ringed dorsal spots (and most are by darth pike himself). I have looked at dwarf creni pictures until my eyes went crossed.

Is it possible that this is yet another new thing, a la the mysterious blue face Krobia from a few years ago that never popped back up again?

Well, I did find one pic that comes very close ... but it's from the Rio Branco which isn't in the approved collection sites in Brazil. So either someone sneaked across the border for some collecting, or this is something new. Given that it came in from a probable Colombian export, even a dash into Brazil wouldn't explain the Rio Branco. It's not like it's near the border.

Here is the pic of a female Cr. wallacii 'Rio Branco' ... but looking at those newer, close up pics, the dorsal fins don't quite match up. The pic is from Jens Gottwald's pike site, http://www.crenicichla.net/

Looks really cool! Did the LFS actually give you the wholesaler's contact info? I wish you luck finding details on collection points, in my experience, the wholesalers in the South American countries either don't want to share the actual collection points or don't even care to know where the collectors are getting the fish exactly. I have had a lot of dealings with different Columbian exporters, it is almost impossible to get the proper locations . . . I have been trying to get some different pikes out of there and it's terrible.

:WHOA: whatever the hell it is... NICE.

I've emailed the wholesaler before and got a response, when the Colombian wallacii first came out through them. Plus it's the wholesale part of The WetspotI from Aquabid, and they answer lots of their emails. I'd be happy if they just verify Colombia, since none of the dwarves from there show this dorsal pattern. Normally you only see it in eastern Brazilian species/races. Like the Rio Branco wallacii or cf. heckelii.

Of course, I doubt they'd admit even if they knew their collectors were making Brazil runs so I won't hold my breath!!!

Beautiful... you should really pm peanut power though, if anyone can id it, its him

More news, Dr. Wayne Leibel didn't recognize it either ... the excitement grows.

I am going to guess it came in as an extra unknown in the vendors shipment. Probably an undescribed locality of something. Great little pike though. Lookking forward to see if you get an ID.
