EXCEPT for the salad part. A salad is a salad whether it is sold at a fast food place or not!
Well....yes and no. A salad is not a salad.
The fast food salads are full of croutons, bacon, and other ingredients that are high in saturated fats, sugars, and sodium. You add in the salad dressings, and suddenly you are eating something that is more unhealthy than the burgers.
Plus, many of the vegetables were treated with preservatives and chemicals to prevent the vegetables from oxidizing (turning brown). There are many studies revolving around commonly used preservatives and disease, and some countries in Europe are pushing to ban many of the chemicals added to food.
*this was the case in the 2004-2005 era when I stopped eating fast food. McDonalds got called out on this fact at the time, so I don't know what, if anything has changed. Either way, I'm not going to gamble.
Furthermore, of all the vegetables in the world, lettuce (iceburg and romaine, which is the core of the fast food salads and most salads in general) are of the least nutritious in existence.
One cup of iceberg lettuce:
- 8 calories
- 0.5 gram protein
- 0.7 gram fiber
- 10 mg calcium
- 78 mg potassium
- 1.5 mg vitamin C
- 16 mcg folate
- 13.3 mcg of vitamin K
- 164 mcg beta carotene
One cup of romaine lettuce has:
- 8 calories
- 0.58 gram protein
- 1 gram fiber
- 16 mg calcium
- 116 mg potassium
- 11.3 mg vitamin C
- 64 mcg folate
- 48.2 mcg vitamin K
- 1637 mcg beta carotene
Where as you compare this to a cup of green cabbage (which is towards the bottom of the list as well) and you see that many of the values are higher than even romaine lettuce.

If you really want to get healthy, make a salad from field greens and/or spinach instead of the lettuce. Or, skip the salad and opt for a steamed vegetable that has higher protein, fiber, and vitamin values.
