Do a gorgeous male Convict. Generic..... Yes. Make it a mission to have the best looking one! Really put thought into the setup. Do a kind of Biotope thing. And get a Male Convict. They will get a great personality, and feed it a really varied diet and see how he will flourish. Be picky on the markings, fin colors, etc. A full grown male Convict with a hump looks a lot like an Amphilophus.

I remember something GuepoteMel on YouTube said one time. Basically he talked about how once you are in the hobby for a long time, you realize what fish you like the most. And if it is something "common" who cares?? Get the best quality of that species, like a W/C caught one or something just to add that little but more umph to it.

Not a cichlid, but I will say my wife absolutely adored her Pea Puffers. She had a pair for a long time and to this day she still says they where her favorite fish.

Telmatochromis Temporalis. It has the kok, the attitude, pays attention to you and you can keep a few in your tank.
I'd recommend a 48" tank for that.

+1

Check out "Dan Hiteshew" on YouTube. He has a lovely male sajica
My favorite channel on YouTube. Good to see someone else likes him.

+1 for Sajica, they get to 6", get a nice nuchal hump, and act basically like a small midas cichlid.
An Avocado puffer would also be an awesome wet pet that gets to around 4-5" and has a personality.
Don't listen to the guy who suggested green terror. There is a good reason we are saying you should not get a 9" fish (and green terrors get to 12" eventually). I think the common misconception is that people online are just grouches who don't want you to have fun in fishkeeping and only keep tiny fish... not true! It is because fish are pets, not toys, and like other pets, they should have enough room to swim around and have varied territory. Dogs kept in pounds too long go crazy eventually and "spin", I have seen this with cichlids where they will nontop ram the glass or will just sit in a corner forever. Also, the bioload created by a 8-12" fish will require you to do large water changes possibly every day to keep nitrates within a healthy range. You and your fish will both be better off if you pick a species that can comfortably live in the tank. Best of luck to you!

Exactly this.
