what is the appeal to pbass?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would thing their similarities to North American bass. People like how it looks and feeds etc. But I think ALOT of the people here that own PBass just jump on the bandwagon and want to fit in. They are not die-hard fish keepers. Once they get over the little phase they sell their stuff off.

Are YOU a "die-hard" fish keeper? What makes one a "die-hard" fish keeper? And what makes you think that the people on here that own cichlas are trying to fit in? This is not high school. I think you are confusing cichlas with alcohol and drugs?...last time i checked this is fish keeping. I know that ALOT of people including myself, owned cichla and joined this forum later to learn and get educated about them. Nothing wrong with that. Some people buy cichlas with out knowing what they are in for. They might realize they do not have a tank big enough and sell them off. Isnt that part of the hobbie?

For you to think that cichla keepers get these fish to "fit in" is idiotic and ridiculous. Have you ever raised a cichla?...or have you ever kept a cichla in general? Its hard work and dont think its easy. Until then, stick to your "sulking betta". My girlfriend takes care of our 3 bettas (which are happy and doesnt sulk)...so does that make her a "die hard" fishkeeper like yourself?

brb....gotta go let my cichlas know that im cool cause i have them

Timthebadass very nice tank i like the collection, i was wondering what kind of bubble bar you have in there. What kind of cat is that im very drawn to it

I don't see anything wrong with the question. He could have worded it better but it's nothing to get upset about.
I like cichla for their size, colour and shape. They are beautiful to look at. Also I love their power. They shoot effortlessly through the water and the way they eat is amazing to watch.
Another thing that I like about them that puts them above other large cichlids is the fact that they do incredibly well in groups. I'm also very fond of the parachromis genus but you couldn't keep them in a mixed group. They interact with each other very well and live as a pack. Finally one thing that I know a lot of my fellow cichla friends love is the variety within the genus. There are loads of cichla species and a number of variations or locales in each species so there is always something different out there.

If this doesn't explain it here's a video of my pbass to demonstrate why I keep them.

Well said Tim...can't see how anyone could watch that video and not understand why we keep these guys. Variety, development, colors, personality, size! For me...Theres nuthin like someone walking in my house for the first time, seeing a tankful of 15"+ MONSTER Cichla and sayin HOLY SH..:WHOA:! ... :headbang2Sick monos Tim!, Makes me miss mine

Im in my 30's and my love affair with Cichla started when I was around 16 BEFORE I could ever get my hands on them. I used to read in Aquarium Mags and Books ( ya before the internet) see them and it being the only fish I wanted.

Back then I had Snakeheads , Jags , Dempsy's , Gars all kinds of interesting and different kinds of fish BUT I never was able to get a P-Bass.

Jump forward 15 years now I can own them. Hunt the rare ones and watch these grow and act like dog's when I come into the room waiting to be fed.

They are just amazing fish to me!!

Well put Tim. And I love that response Callen. My friends think Im crazy for all the time, effort and money I put into my cichla. They are like dogs that live in the water. They always come up to the front of the tank to greet me when I walk in the living room.

I didn't really get it either until I had a good sized one at my store. They are quite interesting and have an interactive personality...the one I had would follow people back and forth through the tank, and try to eat your hand/keys/whatever you put in front of the glass. I found he wasn't really territorial or into picking on fish either...if it could fit in his mouth he swallowed it, but I could keep similar sized fish in with him without worrying about him beating them up for fun, unlike some other cichlids.

Owning, raising, and keeping large adult pbass in monster fish tanks is what seperates the men from the boys in the world of fishkeeping. Any Joe Shmo can buy this species and grow it up but those who are dedicated in love with pbass, find anyway possible to invest in a monster tank and keep the adult pbass for life. Its the true meaning of this forum "MonsterFishKeepers.com". I notice that most of the current activities or posts are from regular sized fish keepers. Not saying anythings wrong with that but the heart and soul of MonsterFishKeepers is just that, monster fish in monster sized setups.

hey timthebadass where did you purchase that bubble disk? been lookin for one ahwile now. what size is it?
