What is the Pound 4 Pound toughest/nastiest cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Everyone is naming the nasiest cichlid based on narrow personal experience. It won't be a fair comparison unless one has the chance to house them together in the same tank, sort like putting them in a boxing ring.

I have always kept mixed CA/SA, Tanganyikans, Malawian and Victorian cichlid tanks and can attest from personal experience that as a group, African mouthbrooders are more nasty than CA/SA pound for pound. It doesn't matter that Dovii or Midas can turn into a monster when they get big, but at 6 inch, they are whimp in a box ring match with mouthbrooders. Each time when I introduce new juvenile CA/SA to my mixed tank, I have to watch out the smaller mouthbrooders as they will immediately pick on the newcommers, while the large CA/SA ignore them. Eventually, the CA/SA will outgrow the mouthbrooders, but it's comical to watch the diminutive mouthbrooders continue challenge the CA/SA at twice their size. Once for while, my giant CA/SA still got split fins from guerrilla attack from the diminutive mouthbrooders but there is nothing they can do about it as the Africans are smaller, quicker and can hide.

Egg laying Tanganyikans and CA/SA only become aggresive when they are reaching sexual maturity or attempting to breed, and some will mellow down when they get old. Mouthbrooders are aggressive at all time, when they are young, mature or old. Egg layers claim a fixed nesting territory with aggression during breeding, and don't pursue fish outside their boundary. Mouthbrooders have no fixed nest and their personal territorial space move througout the entire tank, so their victims have no place to retreat but have to run constantly from their moving bullies.

When I think lb for lb I think of taking a fully mature fish, and either blowing it up or shrinking it down to size, not comparing a mature 6" fish to a young 6" fish.

So if your going to compare say for example a Convict and Dovii take the fully mature Dovii at 20+ inches and shrink it down to 6 inches and compare it to a 6 inch
adult Convict, dont compare a 6" juvenile Dovii to an Adult Convict. If you want to compare fish lb for lb do it at their adult sizes
shrunk down to compare. Comparing an adult fish to a juvenile isn't an accurate way to compare attitude and aggression.

^^^ Thats why i think Convicts win every time lol!
i have 5" Convict who takes on a 10" plus BB Vieja and wins 99% of the time. They are not scared of anything...especially in a pair.

pckts: here's the best example of Haitiensis aggression I could find. Third post down.
(Link is not mine) http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_haiti.php

6" Male Hait killing a 9" pair of Jags, 3 12" Texas cichlids, a pair of 9" Mayan cichlids, 2 10" Oscars, and a 9" RD in a 180...

I guess that is the only thing out there, but it was only 5'' so that is a long way away from full grown, and that guy posts no videos, or pics so I don't think I am so inclined to believe what he says. Because no matter the fish, I would bet a pair of jags, or 12'' texas, or 9'' RD would be far to much.

but its pound for pound.... so pretend all the Cichlids are and only grow to the same size then do your comparison

I understand everybody is stuck on this pound for pound.............so at the end of the day, there would be no cichlid with the weapons of a dovii. They have the largest fangs of any cichlid at any size, they are the fastest fish I have ever seen, maybe a umbee is faster but they don't have the fangs of a dovii, and Dovii by far have the worst attitude you will ever see in a fish. PERIOD!! I gotta go with a Dovii
