What would it take?

If my most prized fish died, I think I'd just replace it with something I always wanted to try.

If I lost your job, I'd have a lot bigger issues then fish.

If I came home and my biggest tank sprung a leak and emptied out, I'd have to break my walnuts out of the wifes purse before I could even think of a new tank.

If my significant other accidentally killed my entire collection, I'd be getting some pretty nice replacements, on her dime.

I am probably the odd man out here, but this is a hobby for me. Albeit a pretty consuming and exciting hobby, I still have many other interests and I could see leaving the hobby and really not look back for plenty of years.
I have 3 dogs, they are family. I lost my best friend just about 10 years ago and still have nightmares about finding him. THAT was life changing. I really really enjoy my fish, but there is no real attachment. They feel more like property or possessions.

1) well, if my most prized fish died - i'd find a replacement or something else.

2) if i lost my job - i'd cut back my fish expense until I get another one.

3) if my biggest tank sprung a leak - i'd take a break until I'm not pissed anymore then save enough to buy an acrylic tank.

4) if my GF killed all my fish - I would get even. J/K People we love most have the most potential to hurt us most. Well, that's love for ya!

Bottom line is unless I can find another hobby to keep me more occupied than this I don't see myself leaving this hobby.

If my most prized fish died: Happened Christmas Eve.

If I lost your job: Happened 7 years ago.

If I came home and my biggest tank sprung a leak and emptied out: Result 230 gallons of saltwater in the dining room, bedroom and wife's office. Spent about 2 hours with wet/dry vac cleaning up.

If my significant other accidentally killed my entire collection: Hasn't happened yet, but have had tanks wiped out by other causes. (House fire in 1995, Days without power)

Nothing has gotten me to leave the hobby yet, although I may leave the hobby (somewhat) at the end of the month if I get the job I applied for. I will have to leave the hobby because I won't be home much. The job will have me away from home 2 - 3 months at a time, the consolation is that I will be working with fish every day. My 16 year old son has offered to take care of my tanks while I am gone, but I don't feel that he is ready for reef aquariums yet. If I get the job, I will sell the contents of my reef tank and change it over to freshwater so he can use the tank for his Oscars and angelfish, he will also take over the care of the amphibiums (at his request).

What would it take right now for you to simply say, "I give up, Im outta here!" to this hobby?

Would you start over? Take a break? Leave for awhile?

So you don't keep fish?!?

I get dismotivated whenever I think that I cannot progress further into the hobby. I started with a 1g, moved to a 5g, got a 10g, then a 29g, then jumped to 75g. Then I started back again at 29g but started keeping monsters, then I had monsters in my 75g. Now i'm working on my 300g. I honestly hope to see myself where johnptc is in the years to come.

Also, I don't want to just keep monster fish. I didn't think so in the beginning, but my ultimate goal is not only to have a monster tank with rare, monster fish, but to be able to breed them. Breeding monster fish is THE ultimate goal for me.

If my big tank busted, that would be a big blow. Not necessarily due to the loss of fish/the tank but because of the damage to everything around it and cleanup.

I hope that never happens.
