You've got me interested in doing a larger version of my 8 litre/2 gallon cherry shrimp cube. How much do 70W metal halide fixtures cost in your area? Only ones I can find online here (Australia) are many, many hundreds of dollars. For lowtech I'd probably better off with power compacts anyway.
