would this work??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yep, not for three full grown ones. That Lions helmet is pushing it. Would do better with a purple one. LOL

Your average full grown oscar is 12" where I live your standard 4' (aka 55) is 48x14x20. Thats 2" wider then your average Oscar.

I keep seeing people with overstocked tanks with Aros, dats and p-bass in them and thats all fine and dandy. BUT, an oscar (a 12" fish) can't be housed in something 4x longer and as wide as it. Your average person will say that a aro needs a tank as wide and three times as long as it. So lets say a 3ft silver needs a footprint of 9x3, is that for one? No, people can keep 2, 5 hey even a dozen in that tank without a hint of fire. But one oscar in a 55 is too small, it makes me laugh:ROFL: .

If you wanna do it, go ahead, it sure as hell is possible (the fish would be no worse off then those Aros, don't kid yourselves). I personally would only do 1 oscar with a couple of little fish (maybe some small catfish) is the limit of a 55. But you didn't ask for what we would do but rather if it is possible. I think it is and if done properly your fish would probably be healthier then most Oscars out there. I have seen an Oscar that is kept in a 3ft (36x15x18) tank for its entire life, no HITH, 13" long and just looked stunning.

Once again, would I do it, No. Is it possible, Yes.

I would just get 1 O and enjoy the personality they develop when kept on their own.

A 60g tank is only 12 inches wide so a fully grown O will not be able to turn around properly, this is the main reason why people recommend the wider 75 instead of a 55 as a base for keeping O's. As for filtration it doesnt matter how many filters you have on an O tank unless you can remove nitrAtes, so unless you have an automatic water changing system using warm well water I dont see how it can possably be a good idea to put 3 fully grown O's in a 60g tank.

I'm gonna have to side with mostlycichlids here. Maybe you could keep them alive for a while, but you are talking about massive waterchanges, not just biweekly, I'd say once they are over 8 inches, you will be doing a minimum of 3 75%ish w/c's a week, and if infact they do stay healthy in that environment, you will be carrying that waterchange schedule for 10 years plus. If you want to sign your life away, I guess you could try it.

:iagree: u could go on holidays for a week and you would come home to dead fishies!

So people ith these overstocked tank ith aros etc in them cant go on holiday for a week either:screwy:. Ohh ait, that seems to be different by most of the views diplayed in this thread. Aros mustn't produce waste at all then.

Do it, prove these guys wrong.

Nova, settle down.

I would never put more than 2 O's in a 60. A 75 for 1 is my rule, then add 40G for each additional Oscar.

You may be able to have a few oscars in a 60 up untill they hit 6-8" but thats IT! Provide superior filtration. 10x

nova your wrong about the foot print of a 55g. it is 48 X 12 X 20
that is not good for one oscar seeing as how a lot of oscars get 13in+.

people cannot put 3 oscars in a 60g. i guess its "posible" but its also possible to cram a 14in. midas in a 10g.

75 for 1 and 40 for each additional Oscar is absurd. That means my 6x2x2.5 (220) can hold about 4 3/5 Oscars with no other fish, I better get a new tank as I am grossly overstocked then, the 3 Oscars are pushing the limits let alone with the other fish included, I'll be over once the two I am growing up reach 5" and are added to the tank
The Trust's tank, which is 250 gal can hold about 5 3/5 Oscars, but of course he has P-bass and Aros in there so it's different :screwy:

No one stocks like this, but when it comes to Oscars everyone jumps on the bandwagon and dribbles rubbish, why is this?

Can you tell me the way to work out volumn using the Imperial system, here is australia we use the metric system, I find the imperial system confusion at best.

The tank is a 60gal, for all we know it could be only 3' long, or it could be 48"x14"x20"w. You don't know, but I still stand by my statement that it is possible. Oscars are happy aslong as they are fed. I bought a big tank for my Oscars and they sit near the area that they eat, sure they swim around but most of their day is spent waiting for food.

For both of you, I have a question. What is the minimum tank for 1 Arowana, what about 2, how many extra gallon need to be added?
