Electric Eel
Electrophorus electricus

Size: 4.5’ [Sometimes larger]
pH: 6.0-7.0
Tank size: 1500G/Individual
Country of origin: Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, Suriname, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Sluggish, though extremely dangerous
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Electrophorus electricus is the iconic image that comes to mind for many when they think “eel.” However, as you may know, these fish are not eels at all, but rather knifefish. No true eel is known to possess any form of electric charge. Due to this fish’s extreme electrical charge, they should be kept either alone, or in a species tank. Some have successfully kept them with small dither fish such as tetras, though this has its risks. This species has been known to reach up to 8’ in the wild-- However, this is rare in captivity.

Again-- Most sites will probably estimate the size for the electric eel at about 7-8'. Though this isn't super rare in the wild, captive specimens very rarely if ever attain this size, and usually stay at around 4-5'. (4.5' approximate average)

Definitely a fish I’d love to try if I have a lot of extra space and am feeling extra daring…

Description

Anabas testudineus is a gourami relative that can be found in several countries throughout Asia. While this species is not overly shy, hiding spots and foliage are, though not needed, appreciated.
