...or forgetting to plug a heater back in, or forgetting to add water conditioner etc. I know, stuff happens.

What I don't understand is how a person buys a creature that they know fully well they are not prepared to care for in the 1% chance it actually makes it into adulthood. I guess it's a good thing that 99% of these GATF die when they are young so that this open water (river) fish doesn't have to live it's life cramped in a small tank.

PS- I think what you mean in your signature is "status symbol" not "symbol status." I like sharing my setup and fish too, but the way you post your "look at me" and "guess what's in the box" threads every other day really makes it hard to believe that statement. It's pretty clear by all the mishaps and dead fish threads that you have posted that you may be in over your head. I think animal hoarders should do on episode on you. You're like the cat lady, who doesn't know she's the cat lady:

You two sound like brothers from a different mother.

I went back and read this whole thread again and you two had some nasty exchanges, so it's ironic you both now seem to be on the same page.

It's a bit messed up that you think fish (and presumably any other thing on the planet) are "put here for us to use." I guess we do have the ability to do whatever we want, but seems like some judgement is in order. I don't think it's right that people laugh at you for this incident, but you were trying to make a community fish out of GATF. That's pretty absurd.

I'm curious, what if it did work? What then? What do you do with three 4' GATFs?
How many creature have you bought that you have cared for it to adulthood or for life? What happened to those creature in your old 240gal tank?
In regards of my signature, those are words from a "fish lover" just like you, who loves fish so much that seeing them as "status symbol," instead of seeing them as just a fish. I didn't realize that showing fish on a fish forum could be a sore in the eye for so many "fish lovers."
Animal hoarder has not done an episode on me, perhaps they see fish as fish, not animal...
I'm not sure where's on this whole thread that me and sbuse had some nasty exchanges. We may have some nasty exchanges, whether on this thread or different ones, but it doesn't mean we don't see eye-to-eye on some issue, whether we are brothers from a different mother or not. However, I don't think you and I can see eye-to-eye, since we belong to 2 different groups like you classified, the Hobbyist and the Hypocrite. Shall we stop wasting each other time?

Lol, this goes along with the jdm tanks the same way, as long as the owner thinks it looks "cool", and people call them ballers, it's all good. Even if their fish mortality rate is worse than, well, a JDM tank.
Oh, and before anyone goes through my post history and tries to get some "dirt" on me, to insult me. I've learnt, i've changed.
More than i can say for most of the "pros" on here.
Cheers.

The internet has enough misinformation: fish are classified under the Kingdom Animalia. They are indeed animals.

I found good homes for all of my fish when I had to move out of the house I was living in. The difference is that people buying these huge growing fish either give them to others who are equally incapable of caring for them (how many people can realistically keep a 4' GATF?), or they put them down (perhaps a fish BBQ?). I guess that's ok if that's how you roll, but I just can't see doing that to a creature that I've spent so much time and effort caring for. But you are right, I ate fish the other night and it was delicious, so I am a hypocrite. Dangit, you got me! :irked:

I think we actually already agreed to disagree in the past, so I won't waste anymore of your time.

Happy Fish Keeping!

What's the difference? Either one will grows his fish to adulthood or for life... How do you know you found a good home? Have you checked on them recently? How big is the arowana and other fish? BTW, are you going to find good home for all those goldfish, too, since you're done with their purpose? Or are you going to grow them out for life?

i have lost interest in this whole damn thing....but so you know i had a gatf pond in order if it did work. but hell how
many prople are against arapimas? they get much larger the gatf, but people including my self own or will be owning them. just because everyone thinks it is bad that doesnt mean it is bad. i dont care if someone is agianst me or others. all things are put here for us to use. some people choose not to see it this way and they can eat there carrots while i eat my steak. i take on the world and there will be judgement and on that day you will have your list of regrets and i will tell god i lived my life to the fullest like he intended. i never have regrets those will bring you down. take advantage of what you have and live like there is no tomorrow cause one day there wont be one.

Loved the speech, just changed one thing for those getting caught up on that particular word, hope you don't mind. We are caretakers, people, not AIDS. Don't shoot the guy who's making an effort, however misguided you may or may not believe that effort is. At least it is an effort.

I thought we were done but we can continue the debate if you'd like...

Are you seriously saying there is no difference between a goldfish and a GATF? Even comparing an Aro to a GATF is off base. Try rehoming a 4' GATF and tell me how many of the people wanting it actually have a setup large enough to keep it? It's like comparing a house cat to an African Lion...having to rehome each creature is not ideal, but how many are able to take care of a lion?

Some fish should be left for public aquaria that can actually care for them (ex- GATF, Pimas, Bumblebee Grouper etc) but the irresponsible impulse buyers here will continue to create the demand. You can't see past your own nose...all that matters is you get to keep what you want now...like a little child.

In regards to the arowana, I have learned from that mistake (see my current stock) and will not be keeping one again, not even in my 770G.

Continue with your dead fish threads and continue to think you are doing nothing wrong. There are plenty of teenage kids on this site that will offer their condolences and encouragement to "add more GATF" but the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Just chalking it up to bad luck? C'mon man.

I am against people trying to keep Arapaima or any fish that they don't have the ability to properly care for; almost everyone who buys a Pima claims to have a pond in the works, but very few have any understanding of what it takes to setup a tropical pond in a sub-tropical environment, let alone in MN. Pima is a bad idea. If you are really considering one, reach out to JohnPTC and get some details on his setup. He's in SoCal (much milder climate than yours) his setup is indoors and he's running four 6KW heaters (total of 24,000Watts!). His electric bill is probably bigger than most people's mortgages. I'm not informing you of this to rain on your parade, but it's just the reality of the situation- heating large bodies of water is very expensive.

I agree that just because something is unpopular you shouldn't automatically assume it is bad (I liked your sheep and wolf analogy). But if you do some research and look into what it takes to care for these giants you will find out why you don't see everyone on this site posting pictures of their tropical ponds full of adult Pimas, Pacu, and GATF...instead what you see is a lot of kids posting pictures of their new baby monsters in their 125G growout and almost all of them end up dead well before they are anywhere near adult size. It's a real shame.

My apologies if my posts have offended anyone.

Is that what I said? What do you actually know about a GATF to come to such conclusions? Without the one who does the same thing over and over and expecting different result, there would be no result to offer to the one who does nothing but just looking for information. "Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new." It's just a hobby, meant to be enjoy. There's no need to feel insecure....

you see this is the problem with people. you feel that these fish belong in public aquaria. i agree that the average 15 year old on this site cant handel any of these fish. i am not your average 15 year old i have been keeping fish longer then they have been alive. look through 100% of my threads have i ever had a pima? no. i know they grow faster then i have space for currently. more math for everyone. gatf grow stupid slow, though i had larger growth then most. there is a 6year old "2 foot" gatf on here. how long would that take to get a 4' fish? i CAN house 3 2' fish right now in fact i have several. even if you try to dig up my big cat threads and throw them in my face. when i got them i lived in a house, planned on a stock tank in the basement for them. brotherinlaw lost the house so i couldnt do that. so what did i do? oh ya i found them each a 600 gal + to go into. i know how much it take to heat a large body of water. why do you assume these ponds will be outside or in a cement garage? my pima pond will be in a set up simmilar to arapimags. and i will have an addition i build on my house that i build. just because some people dont know how to do it doesnt mean everyone cant. i will be costly, but you dont know a thing about me yet you try to judge me and bring up judgement. now who is being a child? think about the few that can do it then, add my name to that list. if i remember right johnptc built his big tank after he got the fish, sound familiar? his tank is also in a shop if i remember right and there is not much insulation. cali is not 80f all year long. a properly insulated water tight room, with an ambiant temp of 80f will not need much to heat that water if at all. i will have olypic pool heaters on my pond, but that is because i have not done research right? think what you want but in the end i will have my fish and you will see them in the pond that will be prebuilt and then i want you to come to it and post in it that i am a fool for going the distance and pushing the boundry of modern fish keeping. outside of this site there people that have never even seen a 125gal and think it is huge. you just sound retarted when you say a 700gal+ is not big enough for an aro. unless the tank is long, tall and 2' wide.
