There seem to be two schools of thought on this site and that's why threads like this are controversial.

School of thought #1. When you buy a living creature, you have a responsibility to provide it with a healthy environment to live.

School of thought #2. When you buy a living creature, it's ok to put it in an environment that you know is perilous, but it's ok as long as you are entertained and it's done in the name of "pushing the envelope."

I think it's awesome that you share the failed attempts so that people can learn what not to do, but I don't think you should be surprised if there are people who feel more compassion for the dead fish than for you.

i am not suprised there are people that feel more compassion. those people have not chimed in on how it is a living thing except one person. the main haters are just people being pricks because i should have never tried this in their opinion so that give them the instant right to ride my johnson all day long because they were right this time. there is a difference in a care for the fish(like i do when i help people that ask me lots of questions about many different fish) and just outright being a prick.

Probably because PPL understand what "good husbandry" is and that pushing that envelope involves some sort of risk both financially and to the fish. The rest is pure luck. It sucks when it fails but it's spectacularly awesome when it works - what another man can do and accomplish, I can suely do better and more.

When I bought a GATF for $150 I thought I put it in the safest tank I had - stock was 1 senegal bichir - he ate the GATF with 24 hours. Never bought another, although came close to purchasing a Vittatus. Talked myself out of it - didn't want another large complicated mouth to feed.

I'm on this site and I'm from school of thought #1. Not everyone on this site believes that packing huge growing fish into a small tank is something to aspire to.

I think they are upset because they feel bad for the fish that got obliterated and you seemed to be upset with the fish for doing what they do. They are completely at our mercy in regards to every aspect of their well-being and when they end up dead, it's 100% on us, not them.

That sucks about the GATF. It's probably for the best that you didn't get the VATF; sometimes good husbandry means making the decision not to keep a fish at all. I'm sure you are well aware that both of these species grow 3'+. If you don't have a (1,000G+) tank big enough for these huge river fish, you don't have any business buying them; it's just irresponsible.

I'm not trying to pick a fight with you guys...I just am trying to understand how you rationalize what you do given the low success rate as well as knowing that in the majority of cases you will not be able to care for the fish for the duration of it's life.

How many full grown VATFs and/or GATFs are there on this site? The reality is that almost no one on this site has the resources or the discipline to house them properly (solo).

There are two kinds of people, one who lives his/her life and one who lives other's life, seeking other approval. How someone thinks that he provides the best environment by putting a fish in a glass box, filled with water that was treated with chemical, and treated it again to remove those other chemical; run with all kind of gadgets like air pump, filter, heater; feed with all kind of unnatural food like pellet, or whatever he can gets his hand on at local supermarket? How someone thinks that he would be able to care for a fish for the duration of its life? He can only hopes for the best. All it takes is a brief black out when he was on vacation, or out dinning, and there goes a fish life!

i live my life on my terms. i aim to please god, my wife and my kids. i do that in my own way. no one can change that. i do nothing without reason. everything i do has a perpose. if that affects anyone else i dont care. for all those that see this, it is not a rant, but how i feel. people are sheep and follow others into everything. i go were i want and do what i want, why because i can, thus i am not a sheep but a wolf.

i am just like everyone else on here by the fact that i put fish in a box for my enjoyment. how many 1000000's of feeder have these "pro-life" peta fish nuts feed to their prize fish? how are they able to judge that a feeder is less then a larger fish? they can't. all fish are fish, they are all fish put here for us to use. i choose to put the limts of the box and i choose to use these fish as my relaxation tool. without these relaxation tools such as fish people, well....just watch the news you'll see what they do.

...or forgetting to plug a heater back in, or forgetting to add water conditioner etc. I know, stuff happens.

What I don't understand is how a person buys a creature that they know fully well they are not prepared to care for in the 1% chance it actually makes it into adulthood. I guess it's a good thing that 99% of these GATF die when they are young so that this open water (river) fish doesn't have to live it's life cramped in a small tank.

PS- I think what you mean in your signature is "status symbol" not "symbol status." I like sharing my setup and fish too, but the way you post your "look at me" and "guess what's in the box" threads every other day really makes it hard to believe that statement. It's pretty clear by all the mishaps and dead fish threads that you have posted that you may be in over your head. I think animal hoarders should do on episode on you. You're like the cat lady, who doesn't know she's the cat lady:

You two sound like brothers from a different mother.

I went back and read this whole thread again and you two had some nasty exchanges, so it's ironic you both now seem to be on the same page.

It's a bit messed up that you think fish (and presumably any other thing on the planet) are "put here for us to use." I guess we do have the ability to do whatever we want, but seems like some judgement is in order. I don't think it's right that people laugh at you for this incident, but you were trying to make a community fish out of GATF. That's pretty absurd.

I'm curious, what if it did work? What then? What do you do with three 4' GATFs?
