Why Do We Have To Kill Another To Live? Serious.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I certainly have. my aunt had one similar to yours in Minnesota that i spent summers on growing up. I respect these farms. A lot of our food comes from industrialized factory farms that bear little resemblance in that respect.

That's the sad truth unless you have connections to family farmed meat. My family still buys most of our meat from a farm neighbor. Even in Arizona my grandparents bring in meat farmed less than 45 minutes from where they live.

What goes into the commercially farmed fish?

Look, i'm aware we have to kill to survive. I'm preaching at this point, but why stop now?
I just believe we consume far too many animal products. Part of my day job is schmoozing business owners, so I sometimes indulge in eating meat and poultry because it's customary. I do eat meat but not regularly. Once or twice a week, opposed to once or twice a day like I did when I was younger. When i do usually fish and occasionally frog legs :) this is because of the reasons mentioned above but for other reasons too.

A large portion of the crops we grow go to feeding animals we are raising for slaughter. It's impossible to get an exact measure but it's estimated that if everyone went vegetarian we would have enough food to feed all of the humans globally 2-5 times over. This isn't realistic, ideal or desirable but even a slight reduction would help. Because the animals we eat are warm blooded, they expend a large amount of calories just by existing and maintaining body temperature. Because of this The caloric return is low. The estimates are all over the place depending on your source but it takes between 3-10lbs of feed per pound of red meat.

The US is improving by using soy husks and corn waste from distilleries for feed. Products inedible to humans. But this again doesn't help with the nutrient composition and health of the animals. If we only fed food sources non edible to humans (grass fed, etc) it would help negate this.

Pollution is another factor. In the book freakonomics by Stephen dubner and Steven levitt they examine recent studies that report the following. Ruminants produce massive amounts of methane. Ruminants ferment foods in their stomachs resulting in this gas. Cows and goats (the most common globally consumed meat) are Ruminants. Methane is around a 25x more destructive greenhouse gas than CO2. Again estimates but with all of the cows and goats domesticated on the planet they produce enough methane to equate to the amount of CO2 produced by combustion engines and factories globally.

With earth approaching human over population, we may be forced to cut back on meat consumption to combat famine.

It has been asked why we need factory farms have you looked at the world lately. Here in Albeta the days of the 10 cow dairy farm,100 laying hen farm and 400 acre grain farm are GONE. If a farmer doesn't farm at least 4000 acres of land or 6000 hens or as mentioned earlier you go belly up. Every thing we eat now is doped up or genetically modified even our fresh veggies.
I never said animals don't suffer nice twist of words though.
I also continued on the featherless chickens by saying they were moulting. They are debeaked because they will peck no matter crowding or running lose. We all know kings can be miserable so why mock that or was Henry the 8th a saint. If he was I must have missed that in history.
Dieselhybrid you talk about this great healthy vegan diet then admit you were eating animal protein. That animal protein was probably what kept you healthy.
Why are some of you forgetting I said how easly as humans we can be lead astray. Sorry if that comment may have held to much truth in it.The truth is large production farms don't look as nice as farms of old did. How ever these farms are feeding all of us. If we were all to become vegans we could then live off the expliotation of foreign workers that would be way better.
This thread was started wondering why something had to die for another to live sadly these things always end up going in this direction. For that I will take the blame but none of us have any power to change how life works. It is also high time people quit accusing farmers of being animal abusers.

Why don't you clear this up for all of us then and detail how one should go about this :)

Of course bro. I eat around 3-4 whole eggs daily. Another 5-8 egg whites daily. Rice and beans in combination make a full amino complex. Quinoa alone is a complete protein. 2-3 blended shakes daily with vegan protein powder around 50 grams, Quinoa, chia seeds, ground flax, almond milk, almond butter, various frozen berries and sometimes Greek yogurt. Nuts are important for me, Constantly snacking on almonds, cashews, walnuts and pecans. I'm allergic to peanuts :( otherwise I'd use peanut butter all of the time. PM me for more info.

I am not world class or great by any means and I admit i probably would have been bigger/stronger if I ate more meats but I do well on this diet.

Wild bill I never claimed to be vegan or entirely vegetarian. I just believe we don't need as much meat as we consume. I also believe that our bodies and our environment would be healthier of we consumed less.

I stay in shape and eat a pretty balance diet, plenty of fruits and greens. I would like to eat less meat...........but, damn, meat is like crack to me!

We don't have to agree, I'm learning another perspective which is valuable to me. I don't think the OP minds the direction this has taken. (Get it? "Taken" )

He started a thread that began a conversation and debate. I took it a little too far and was reeled in by Pharoah. As long as we don't get political or religious and keep it PG we're good.

Farmers are doing their jobs, the most important job of keeping people fed. I thank them for that. I just see the products they produce and the manner it's produced in needing to change as the need for sustainability grows.

you dont know much about nutrition and how a vegan diet works if you think that meats are needed to keep you healthy. pretty much everything found in animal proteins can be found in other food sources. and luckily for our species those other sources are digestible and not immediately turned into waste.

I never said animals don't suffer nice twist of words though.
and yes you did.
Lets gets the PETA ideas out our heads those chickens don't suffer.
the only thing twisted here is your memory.
