180 Big enough or not ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes. I can find internet "research" to prove that red=5.

I can also do relevent research from actual fish keepers on the subject.

And for the record, my tank is bigger than a 180. I'm a home owner, and make a good bit of money. I can get as big of a tank as I want, and I will not be keeping my Dovii in a 180. If you can afford it, and have the room, by all means, go bigger. It's great for the fish. But if not, a 180 is fine as long as you don't happen to get the 1% of Dovii that get as big as Mel's.

Maybe.....Do you have any evidence to back that up?

In my experience, growth has more to do with water conditions than tank size (barring being stupid with tank size). A bigger tank is obviously easier to keep water conditions good in, but with good rigorous maintenence, good water conditions can be achieved in a non-gargantuan tank.

If what you have is a 180 and you want a Dovi then go for it. BUt, I will tell with 100% certainty what is going to happen. 1) You are going kick your self for not getting a big enough tank and you will or2) you will be trying find a home for it, 3) It will ram itself into the tank either breaking the tank or killing itself.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES RELEASE IT IN THE WILD.

seedubs ....... from your previous discussion.

I have a 265g tank - 7' x 2' footprint and rehomed my former Dovii because I didn't think the tank would be big enough to hold him for life. Plus he was such a psychopath, after he shattered one of the glass lids, my wife became convinced he would bust the tank one day.

Balton's response was in fact referring to a single lone male.

People with systems that are on average too small to comfortably house a fish long term always seem to find a way to justify their decision. Or as a buddy of mine likes to say, you can't stop stupid. :)

Thanks for the insult RD. Glad to see we are keeping this a debate instead of getting personal.

Anyway, this will continue to be a debate as long as Dovii are kept in private aquaria. There's no convincing one side that the other side is correct. I recommend everyone do their own research to find out what it takes to keep one.

BTW - last time that I spoke with Chris (cchhcc) his dovii male was 22", and still growing. His tank is 1,000 gallons, but I'm sure that has nothing to do with its growth either.

Do you think it's a coincidence that one of the largest male dovii ever recorded in an aquarium is kept in a huge tank? How much evidence do you need?

He also has awesome water conditions. You can't seperate one from the other (tank size and water conditions). I'd need to see a statistical trial. I'm an engineer, it's what I do for a living. You just can't say that it's solely because he has a big tank. If he had raised it in a 240, who knows how big it would be.

That was a general comment, directed at the general population of people on this site who not only refuse good sound advice, but discount it with zero experience on their side.
