abei came in today

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That little monster will come around for sure... he was the most active one of the three that was here. Always wanting food and chasing fingers against the glass.
glad to know he made it alright!

Thanks Neon. Yea hes starting to venture around alot more with the tank lights off, and even ventures a bit with them on. Just outta curiosity, how long did you have him at the shop? Did he grow at all? He looks soooo tiny in this huge tank. Hoping he will get twice what he is now. Im guessing hes just over two inches, and have got a lot of contradicting info on their size when full grown. The pufferpedia says 4 inches, but have seen some people say 6. I would love him to get to 6.

As for the worms, I am going for it. Would a baby carrot suffice as food? Ill be setting up a worm bin on my days off this week. Gonna shoot to set up a 10 gallon rimless planted ghost shrimp and snail tank too. Should make for alot of good puffer food.

Yep baby carrot is fine for food. Any fruit or veggies is fine. Any fruit and veggie waste too. You know, like the stuff you cut and throw away. That's all food for them. But remember, go small on the food in the beginning. Another thing, the worms will need for the food to be almost rotting before they can even eat it. Soft foods like kiwi, tomato, strawberries etc is very easy for them to eat cause its soft and squishy and pretty much ready for them to start eating.

They don't have any teeth to bite into hard stuff. But its still food they just need it almost or be rotting already for them to start to be able to eat it. Experiment, and again, also go light on the food and see how much they eat and how fast they eat it. Any food that remains leave it and don't add anymore until its gone.

Well thats one good food source to add to my staple. Now how about snails and ghost shrimp or red cherry shrimp.

I was thinking about putting together a topless/rimless 10. Trying my hand at actual live growing plants in a bed of sand. And then finding a bunch of shrimp and snails to inherit the tank. Would any of those shrimp reproduce? I know the snails would but which exact snail would I want? And are they going to wander out the top of my tank or are the fully aquatic and wont want to leave?

I would breed ramshorn snails. It would be better in the long run. They get bigger than the pond snails. You can feed at various sizes too depending on what your puffer can handle. Between those shrimp I'd go with the cherries. They are much easier to breed than ghost shrimp. And neither of these inverts will crawl out of the tank and leave. Snails will hang out by the water line but never leave. In some rare cases you might get 1 to accidentally leave but you will find it near the tank. They can't get far without staying moist.

If you are going to try some plants try easy plants. If you don't know anything about plants I could help you out. Sand is a good substrate but it lacks nutrients. So I recommend root tabs. Although some of the easiest of plants don't need them. And a single T8 fixture or screw-in compact fluorescent bulbs is usually enough light to grow easy plants.

Will the cherries just breed on their own in the water or will they need some crazy special circumstances? Ramshorns sounds like a good idea. And yea I could always use help setting up for live plants. I think thatd be better for the snails correct?

Is there any sort of fixture that would look food over a rimless topless 10 gallon? Im thinkin a HOB filter will be just fine. I have a bag of sand already which is why I was thinking of using that, but what are root tabs? Thanks for all your help. Will be nice to get a little food farm going for the little guy.

Just got back from gathering the supplies for my worm bin and stopped at big 5 for worms. I have a 1ft by 6inch SteriLite container with a snap on top and handle, half way full with newspaper shreds, and got about 100 red worms and cleaned the dirt off them and through them in. Is room temp gonna be ok for them? Have a piece of browned banana in the bottom corner for food. They were mostly pretty small so im curious how long it will take for them to get bigger and reproduce.

If your going to go with cherry shrimp, make sure you gutload them first or they arent very nutrient rich.

WIth the HOB make sure to put some kind of sponge on the intake so it doesnt suck in your shrimp or snails.

How about some pics of your worm set up
