Not as simple as you might think, considering alot of the people selling these types of fish have no clue about them. The Store I purchased my RTC from had him labeled as a SunCat...I actually ASKED where the suncat was and the lady pointed out the RTC and said there it is... It's crazy that Stores arn't informed to begin with so I would actually have to say that permits should be required as it would force people to actually do their homework to own these things.

When I bought 5 TSN's from an LFS they didn't even ask me if i knew how big they got... just bagged em up... Buyers can't be informed if the sellers arn't held accountable for learning about the fish they sell

I agree with you. By saying Inform buyers I mean the stores would have to help with that. That also means that the stores would have to know.

I've seen too many bad conversations go on at petsmart involving teenage employees telling people that pacu's fit in 55s for life.

more then likely all of them because they get big, and to many people buy them with out knowing how big they get.

I don't think you can ban a fish just because it gets big...that's not fair for the accomplished aquarist. I do, however, feel that some regulation would assist novice aquarists in making the proper decision. It's unfortunate that these groups of irresponsible fish keepers (or should that be "Fish Releasers" :D) can really put a restriction on keeping monster fish.

I would say the best way to do it is with a licensing deal. Fish keepers won't even keep them in stock (other than for display purposes to get people to drool over them) and you have to show say a class C license to be able to order an Arrowana. Class B to order a RTC or Pacu. Class A to order a Gigas. Something like that.

But I would say that it shouldn't be limited to Catfish. I can think of the Snakehead, Wolf Fish, Rays, Piranha, etc that could also require licensing. And particularly Pacu as listed above.

i'd prefer to see a permit being required, however only if the permit dictated a proper humane housing(i.e. not copying deathco or petstupid recommendations) otherwise i would vote for a ban on all FW sp. of fish growing over 20"

I think a permit that you would have that you have to test for and show that you know what to do to house fish of that size. It would also show that you have minimum standards met for keeping these type of fish. Every time you buy a fish you would have to show this permit or give a permit number on file. It will likely never happen, but would be ok with me. This would automatically increase the price of these animals. Also LFS owners should have to have a similar one just to sell them.

I know that even though there would be a definite increase in the cost of these fish it would be worth it. If asian arowanas were available in the U.S., I would drop a grand without hesitation to own one.

I see a few positive things that this could do:

1. The higher prices will deter anyone who even has a license from impulse purchases with species they are not equiped to handle.

2. Think of all the poor monster cats that have seen their demise due some incompentent, spoiled little brat who ABSOLUTELY HAS TO HAVE that one. (I may still have some resentment from working at the lfs. :D) If it will prevent that from happening, I would pay the price.

3. It will make owning that true monster just a little more special. Again, look at the formossus...it is cherished among aro fanatics and the outrageous prices have not stoped those who truely want to keep this fish from owning it.

Just a thought...
