hey jagwa you got african cichlids in your backyard. if you don't want em, share the wealth
:)

I saw the title of this thread and though, "wow, the OP is an idiot and doesn't realize there aren't any Cichla from Africa"
It's okay though, just a typo it seems.

I used to think African cichlids were much more colorful and attractive than SA/CA, but I've realized I was mistaken. There are a lot of brightly colored African cichlids, but the overall body shape is not nearly as cool (although I do like Frontosas), and there are plenty of SA/CA cichlids that have just as nice, or nicer, coloration.

The Rift Lakes are nowhere near South Africa

My first tank was a 55g with about 15 africans. The colored appealed to my mom and i just wanted fish at the time. They have to be the most boring fish in existence. I swore i would never keep them again (Besides some front and some brichardi). They're so similar they make me want to...:barf:. SA/CA have better personalities, entertaining, funner to feed, and grow to monsters. Sorry, for the rant but i'm really opiniated when it comes to SA/CA vs. africans. :D

I've never really been a fan of African cichlids. CA/SA is where its at :D

In my limited experience (watching a neighbors 75g tank) with African cichlids, they don't have much personality...the tank was kind of boring to watch.

I've been looking into africans, but they have all these weird names and idk what is compatible with what. my lfs doesn't help by labeling their tank as "assorted african cichlids." also dunno where to find a nice stack of piles to fill up a 55g if i buy af cichlids, only place i can think of is a fenced off construction site in teh city :(:(

sa/ca seem to be pretty good, i have convicts and oscars. hoping for an angelfish community and maybe an ebjd or discus in the future :D

yeah i agree with you that there is lots to learn about african cichlids and many look alike. you realy need to find a good lfs that sells african cichlids with good bloodlines and not african cichlid mutts. but honestly, you gotta learn about any fish you get and i think the work you put it is well paid off by the beauty of the fish you get to keep. they have their territory battles and their "ranks". its really cool to me

My newly purchased GT has almost as much personality as my dog so watching him in the tank with the JAG just makes my day. I can sit and watch them for hours. My Africans are on the way out to make space for some Osars. But I have to say a big tank full of Haps are hard to beet in color.
