Discus Breeding System

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Dude that is awesome! Can't wait for this build to materialise.
I think wavemakers will be a little unnecessary for discus though, still handy to have

I know the space is heated, but it would probably be worthwhile to get some 2" thick structural foam and use adhesive (there is a special kind for foam sheets) to stick it to the walls for insuluation. I did that in my fishroom, and I studded the walls out over that.. but just the foam alone would help a lot. Use tyvec tape to tape the seams. Looks like your ceiling is already drywalled, hopefully that is insulated already. I insulated my floor as well, but just doing the walls will help.

P paulW yea I've been thinking about that, I am insulating the actual garage door right now. I will have to see how hard it is to hold a temp once there is water in there.

Good luck! Breeding Discus is very rewarding on many levels.

A lot of time and money up front, but it will pay off. Focus on keeping maintenance easy and simple. In the end, thats all you will be anyway.... a glorified water changer. lol

Dont mess with the parameters of the water like PH. The fish will do better in consistant water rather than one you are always trying to fix or hit a specific number. With the PH for example.

Water quality and temp is all I would be concerned with.

Also, reconsider that UV. Especially on the fry tanks. You could weaken their immune system. Never being exposed to anything could pose a problem when you go to sell them and they finally are in other peoples tanks. Something to think about anyways.

In the end, keep it simple. Make sure water changes are EASY to do. Water quality stays top notch... they will do the rest.

Once you get the ball rolling, its just a lot of time and effort. Its not exactly difficult or challenging. Personally, i had the most success with raising the fry off of my DIY food. Since the parents eat it as well, the fry would naturally detach when they were ready and start eating it as well. A couple days later, i would move them to grow outs.

There are 1000 ways to breed discus... find the way that works best for you. Good luck.

Thanks joey02 joey02 I agree, I probably don't need the UV sterializers. I think I will go ahead and leave them in the build, but not use them unless I have an outbreak.

I definitely fall into the mindset of when I read something I think I can build that and then overdue it.

As for water changes, I was going to do the trickle system that you show in your videos. Of course I will be doing cleaning after mealtime and as needed.

I have been doing pricing out of food, to make my own food (your recipe).

Thanks again for posting in this thread, I really appreciate it since you are what inspired me to get back into fish keeping. I've watch all your videos and bought your book. Funny story about that, my fiance was in my office and saw the book. She realized you signed the book and was like "WOW"! I had to inform her you signed all your books haha! Probably should have let that one ride longer and told her "Oh yea Joey and I go way back."

Hey, say what ever you need to say. I'll go along with it. ;)

Haha. Could you make a thread with some aro pics? my girlfriend loves the aro ;)

Good plan, I like to overdo things as well lol. The closest I have done to DIY food is some earthworms I got by trading basil I grew in aquaponics with a parents friend lol.

you should have tried to trick her :p

***UPDATE***

Just wanted to keep everyone abreast on my status. First of all I wanted to say this is going to be a slow process, I am only able to work on this in the evening and on the weekends. Also, I am getting married at the end of May, so that takes priority over the build. However, it does not matter how long it takes me I will be completing this.

Change in plans, I originally wanted to have my 55 gallon tanks on the bottom and be using 2 per side (front and back). I changed my mind on this and I will be taking the 55's apart and building a plywood aquarium across the bottom spanning the full length. This will also stretch my 55's to having more than I currently need, which is always a good thing.

I have added more supports to the rack, now determining how I would run the supports on the bottom level for the plywood tanks.

Steps to come
  • build plywood tanks
  • build filtration system
  • drill (2 = 1 full tank drain + 1 overflow drain) holes in 20 gallon tanks
  • purchase plumbing
  • build/connect plumbing system
I don't have the electronics included in this because I wanted to get the system setup and running before I start on all that. I am thinking the electronics will be a lot of tinkering to get working and would like to move forward without.

Great news with the build and marraige :)

I can't wait to see the end product, this is a more interesting side to the hobby :D
