'Frankensalmon' ruled safe to eat: Fast-growing GM fish approved by scientists

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo

The FDA can be bought. I want to see the studies.

The FDA still recommends beef as a food for people! Decades after it has been shown to be carcinogenic, raise blood pressure, etc. Never trust the FDA, they are just a puppet for whoever has the most money.

i agree, they get published when they're completed.

you don't think we should eat beef??? i know it has its risks like anything else, but.... damn, use a little discretion.

Negative. Like Knifegill said, NO animal can create energy without using atleast as much energy to create that energy. IE balancing an equation in science. One of Newtons laws is matter cannot be created nor destroyed. All that exists now will exist forever, in terms of elements. Take burning a piece of wood for example, well when you burn the wood it doesn't just disappear, all the elements that made up the wood are still in existence, just in the form of ash, gases, and smoke.

IE: 1 pound of salmon = 1 pound of salmon, no more and no less.

ballinouttacntrol wasn't saying they would make energy from nothing (i don't know how you came to that assumption), he was suggesting that they MAY be more efficient at turning that 1 pound of food into salmon (although the article doesn't confirm or deny this).

for example:
natural salmon may turn 1lb of feed into 1/2lb of salmon
while GM salmon may turn the same 1lb of feed into 3/4lb of GM salmon

That was basically my question, just weither or not you could grow larger salmon on less feed. Kind of like how you can powerfeed your fish but once they hit a certain size, their growth rate slows down but not necessarly their appetite. Make sense?

Personally, my stance on this "super salmon" is that we probably won't know the long term effects in my lifetime if there even is one. I wouldn't hesitate to eat them though as i doubt i'd consume enough of them to create any type of health issue

The FDA can still be a good agency. However, after decades of DEREGULATION (YES, DEREGULATION!) since the 80s, the agency doesn;t have any teeth to bite with. Many of the guidelines they use to deem "safe" are pre-1980s and many are still from the original 1930s when the FDA was created.

As someone who Majored (with Honors) in Biochemistry and will be attending med-school, I see a problem where the increased GH (Growth Hormone) in the salmon could be passed onto the consumer. We already have a horome problems with shampoo and other meat products.

FDA approval doesn't mean much (as others have said). Usually just means no immediate harm (notice all the recalls?).

This is why I go with organic. Call me a tree hugging hippie all you want (idc).

My 2 cents.....

Evolution happens because our DNA reacts over millions of years to all sorts of influences of which what we eat will be one of them, of this I am sure.
Over millenia our DNA adapts to the changes in our environment and our "prey" items as determined by nature. Short term changes to our environments have been shown to be bad, take asthma, exzema, autism, etc. These genetic conditions are thought to be a direct result to the extra pollutants we encounter everday.
What happens when the DNA changes in our "prey" items accelerates faster than evolution allows our bodies to adapt with the changes?
What happens when our evolution is no longer in sync with our "prey" items?
The only real answer is no one knows unless they do proper research over decades. Surely past lessons has taught the science community to aire on the side of caution with such large experiments. Taking the proper amount of time to study things in-depth could save a lot of heartache and probably money further down the line.
However, I am sure the company with the most money will tell the various governments to tell us what will happen after decades of life.
Money talks and secretly poorer families in society will be the guinea pigs, and the companies will be watching and taking notes, because they will be the ones who are ultimately left with little or no choice over what type of salmon they want to eat because of how much natural salmon's price will sky rocket.

CORRECT! This is where regulations benefit society! There was a time when American had NO regulations (pre-1900s). Lets not literally take the country "back" to those days.

As cheap as they will be, I'm sticking to Natural and Organic proteins. After watching Food Inc. and being in the Culinary, Health, and Fitness field, I have my beliefs. GMOs and all the processing that food goes through are something that we've been used to digesting and don't even think about where our food comes from. I know that Wild Salmon is better, but there are plenty of reputable farms and vendors for Salmon that I gladly by from because of the Salmon population in the wild.

Yes, it takes a lot of discretion to understand that some things are bad to eat and some things are good to eat. Beef is a terrible thing to eat, directly and reliably correlated with atherosclerosis and hypertension. You should not eat beef, it creates many chronic illnesses. This is not a theory or a scare tactic, it has been known for decades now. But the beef industry keeps lying to the people and the people keep falling for it.

Stupid red. Thanks, guy.

Yes, it takes a lot of discretion to understand that some things are bad to expose yourself to and some things are good to expose yourself to. The Sun is a terrible thing to expose yourself to, directly and reliably correlated with skin cancer and blindness. You should not expose yourself to the sun, it creates many chronic illnesses. This is not a theory or a scare tactic, it has been known for decades now. But the sun tanning industry keeps lying to the people and the people keep falling for it.

Stupid red. Thanks, guy. (it's not that hard to change)
