Well I read 3 articles that says just the opposite and then there’s just more blue color appears randomly….. so I gave it the name Jessie either way gender neutral I vented it 3 times LOL ? I couldn’t figure it out I was shaking photos are bad here take a look 2/3 breeders say female ?‍ nor to I trust my source I come here for the Facts!!!
Keep in mind that I am shaking like a leaf on a tree in a storm and then I am taking the photos as well!! I have never done but with lil 3” African cichlids!!!! So keep in mind I am shaking there’s a pink spot right next to the white one and honestly the shape of it idk ?‍ man !!!! I have struggled with this and then given up!! So yea …. She killed a BA tetra btw but did not eat it

its all good, I wouldn’t recommend doing that too much for pics since it stresses the fish out. Like Deadeye said, I also suck at venting but I’d say female? When she colors up I’d say take pictures of her and we could tell, as females have a lot of blue on the gills and face, lips etc.
Males have a lot less blue around the gills and face, but a lot more color on the body and fins.
And since it’s most likely the dominant fish in that tank it’ll color up a lot, so you wouldn’t have it showing washed up colors, which would make it harder to tell the sex.

LOL ? well from what I see in person it’s definitely a female by the photo beloved it or not which explains the extra blue colors for instance the whole bottom lip turned blue really fast like days!! I am wondering if they juiced her as a juvenile fish???!!!! Ugh horrible! But yea even the written description was a female match the holes basically touch there is a very small gap on males but the vent is smaller as well on this JD they touched it was basically same size but there’s no mate which would cause it to look different. So that’s the conclusion for now! LOL ?

They wouldn’t have juiced it. They just will look different colors in different settings and lightings.
I would have sworn it was a male from the colors - that vent does change things though.

I agree from the colors I’d have guessed male too but now I’m honestly not too sure.

The bearding is male to me (but not 100% sure), but don’t only females have a head with a profile like that? And it’s a bit fatter.
I’m guessing female?

That to me looks male. I’ve got a little Dempsey rn and she (I think it’s a she) has a ton of blue on the gills, at only 2-2.5 inches, so it’ll be interesting to see if that changes.

I know in fact I changed the lighting today and both sides are now almost identical with the more blue a lower blue lip but then the body shape and fins are throwing me still like everything doesn’t add up I was just thinking about re venting tomorrow and then have the actual Vent photo out my husband for his eyes and my food safe gloves …. It’s all I can think of doing there are blue lines under the eyes and blue speckles on both sides of the lower jaw it really pops when I turned up the lights. Just always kept it dim for her …. I don’t know ?‍ but I am just going to confirm and write down that description here it on hand for my husband to answer quick questions LOL ? so maybe I will be replying back with its a male I am way of my venting skills suck or yup it’s female one of 2 answers LOL ?

Ok now my update I said I would give……
So today I was extremely calm with my husband by my side and this being something I needed to do without shaking and that challenge was completed!!!!! No shaking hands extremely calm and I can say with out a doubt my husband agrees with me that it’s a F vent!!!!!
So this is a well learned lesson that when getting a fish like a JD at 6” with possibly poor genetics ? can be a tricky gender!! Everyone said male then Female and I did Not give up!! I am glad I did not and I am actually happy with the outcome!!! Jessie is her name and chasing tetras is her game!! LOL ? I love making up jingles!! Anyway looking forward to seeing your pictures and that is my update I said I would give!!!!
