A lot of the color traits and finnage take a bit to come in - here’s my male at about 2-3 inches:

I already thought he might be a male, but it takes longer for that to really show.
If you are going to do another cichlid, I would either get a few more jd now and wait till a pair forms, or go with a convict or rainbow cichlid. They are tough and can hold their own in a fight, or stay out of one completely. Convict is meaner and would probably be safer, but rainbows can be quite mean as well. Both get about 4 inches or so.
My jd is with a blood parrot, convict, banded leporinus, and a krib (which nobody ate early on and now it’s big).
