there are species of snake heads smaller then 8" that fall under the dwarf snake head category. youre saying 2, 8" snakeheads in a 36"x18"x2' tall aquarium could not be held comfortably? I feel that would be more adequate then one big 18" oscar in the same aquarium. there is a thread on MFK full of different "dwarf snakeheads" that are food in aquariums 30 gallons.
The shot above, is of some uros+ in a stream in about 1 ft of water, of course the stream deepened considerably, about a 1 second dash from the spot. Enough so that manatees swam near by.
I have been in the aquarium game a long time...and I have never seen an 18" Oscar in an aquarium....well, not any regular aquarium. I don't know why you want to take the Oscar comment to task, but Oscars and Snakeheads are apples and oranges. OP asked about single fish with personality and Oscar was one of several I mentioned. Of course there are exceptions to every rule and snakeheads certainly don't all get huge. But two 6" snakeheads in a 64g isn't any different than a single 12" Oscar, and yes, I am saying a typical Oscar won't get much bigger than 12-13"...and as far as legalities and readily available fish, an Oscar is a very viable option.
I don't even like Oscars all that much..been there, done that. OP wanted opinions...so I am, like you, entitled to an opinion....but this arguement about fish for life in a 65g getting down to literally a difference of one or two inches between two completely different species of fish is purely splitting hairs.
A practical approach to fish keeping takes practice, trial,error and dedication to the art of aquarium husbandry. What ever the size of the tank, the fish or the combination of both, we have a responsibility to provide the best care to these animals we take into our care. A "fish for life" mentality is really about dedication to the fish rather than wether a fish can spend its whole life in a given living space. If you think about it hard enough, no fish should be kept on a tiny cage....but I digress. ..

op is in Ireland. there are a fair number of 16"+ Oscars. they do tend to average 14" but snake heads are a great wet pet as well
