Largest Fish that can be kept in a 240l (64 us gallon) tank for life?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for all the replies. Its been interesting reading.

The dimensions of the tank are approx 50" long by 18" wide.

Im guessing its too small for an adult oscar judging by the comments. Would it be ok for a gulper cat?

It is a tank I inherited from a friend that is currently overstocked and Im hoping to sell off what is in there and go for some sort of specimen fish.

That's a better footprint than many people keep Oscars in, if you're set on it you can do it; the real question is down to whether you're prepared to do large water changes, they produce a ridiculous amount of nitrates

Even dwarf snakeheads get 8"..."some small snakeheads..." plural?
A single gulper or a single Oscar makes way more sense that some snakeheads...and if aggression is personality, then all the drivers in SoCal are best friend material!
OP, get a gulper and realize your dream.....
there are species of snake heads smaller then 8" that fall under the dwarf snake head category. youre saying 2, 8" snakeheads in a 36"x18"x2' tall aquarium could not be held comfortably? I feel that would be more adequate then one big 18" oscar in the same aquarium. there is a thread on MFK full of different "dwarf snakeheads" that are food in aquariums 30 gallons.

I have been in the aquarium game a long time...and I have never seen an 18" Oscar in an aquarium....well, not any regular aquarium. I don't know why you want to take the Oscar comment to task, but Oscars and Snakeheads are apples and oranges. OP asked about single fish with personality and Oscar was one of several I mentioned. Of course there are exceptions to every rule and snakeheads certainly don't all get huge. But two 6" snakeheads in a 64g isn't any different than a single 12" Oscar, and yes, I am saying a typical Oscar won't get much bigger than 12-13"...and as far as legalities and readily available fish, an Oscar is a very viable option.
I don't even like Oscars all that much..been there, done that. OP wanted opinions...so I am, like you, entitled to an opinion....but this arguement about fish for life in a 65g getting down to literally a difference of one or two inches between two completely different species of fish is purely splitting hairs.

A practical approach to fish keeping takes practice, trial, error and dedication to the art of aquarium husbandry. What ever the size of the tank, the fish or the combination of both, we have a responsibility to provide the best care to these animals we take into our care. A "fish for life" mentality is really about dedication to the fish rather than wether a fish can spend its whole life in a given living space. If you think about it hard enough, no fish should be kept on a tiny cage....but I digress. ..
Can we? Or should we? Those are the questions right?

op is in Ireland. there are a fair number of 16"+ Oscars. they do tend to average 14" but snake heads are a great wet pet as well

I am indeed in Ireland, Snakeheads are readily available.
Do you have a species you would recommend as a show fish?
Or alternatively if any species were small enough to keep a pair?
