The canal I go to has convict cichlids ,danios and they are way better mosquito larvae eaters than mosquito fish as are some of the other smaller cichlids.

I agree exotics, non natives can be bad but not in Miami Canals . Ofcourse snakeheads-walking catfish a few others can be bads but cichlids any type the more the better lol.

Miami canals if not for the cichlids would be mosquito infested .

While sitting 2 hours waiving a baited hook in front of an oscars face while they just stared without biting lol.
I noticed how many mosquitos the danios and convicts took while the mosquito fish were so so.

The city is suppossed to add a certain amount of mosquito fish every 6 months because birds ,sunfish, etc eat them by the drones but being this inept place the way it is they havent added any in years .

Thank God for cichlids or we would be eaten alive

I would think Mosquito fish would breed faster than they can be eliminated through predation. They are famous for their quick reproduction.

dang, those are some sweet catches! where are you fishing in miami? If you want nonstop tilapia and mayan fishing (lame!) you should try the UM canal behind the wellness center.

it is true
i net every week and never hurt the population
lots and lots of babies
but if you try to breed them in a tank it never seems to happen like in the wild

That makes sense never occured to me that the black/white mosquito fish males and few females I have inside in tank arent breeding as fast since indoors.

I keep lots mosquito fish in my cichlid pond but than again the cichlids eat them so only have a few fry here and there.

Why do you net so many mosquito fish for fishing?

Problem is not all canals contain neat fish you have to know exactly where to go . I have wasted lots of time in barren waters well common sunfish but I dont want those
