Monster sized canister for Monster tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If the tank's drilled do a sump.

Otherwise, a large DIY overhead or dump filter (fed either by a pump in the tank or a large canister like an FX5) will work. That's what I use on my larger tanks.

Matt

I re-doped my new pump 3 times. It still leaked on that same spot. I went and bought a new container of pipe dope and no leak. Put a lot on and let it squeeze out when you tighten. I think that my bottle got bad from sitting...
Not sure if this will help you but that's what worked for me.

looks like a nightmare to clean

I haven't gotten around to pulling the pump (work picked up this week). But i think i am goign to leave some dope on the threads, then wrap in a couple layers of Teflon, then dope again. See if i can get the threads to grab together better. As for using an FX5 or similar, i am bio-balls deep in this build so i'm not going to abandon it now for a $400 filter. I think once i have this last fitting figured i can wet test again, set the overflow "U" pipe and pray. My upper chamber to my filter will have space above the inlet to allow the water levels to even out when the pump shuts down...i hope. Any mass guys around this weekend to help flip switches and pull levers and watch me get electrocuted?

Update: filter has been up and running since sunday, survived a power outage without flooding, and the heater is now running as well...im no fish but damn its a fine ass home. Ill make a video tomorrow and put it up

Hope your surgery went well.
The Filter set up looks great! How's the heater working? I'd like to hear more about controller when you have time. Also excited to see another large African cichlid tank!

The heater is working well except for a small design flaw that is my fault. The box i am using to contain the controller and relay holds to much heat. It caused my ssr to melt and the controller to get a bad signal. So ive repositioned the ssr outside of the box, and the controller is alone in the box. Works well imo. Heats the whole system 1degree c per hour...and keeps the temp consistantly within .3 degrees now
