My 210 FOWLR Turned Reef

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i didnt lose the battle yet.

dont get me wrong i would love to have a tank full of sps's with out the headaches. ):

im still debating on using the bio-pellets.

are any of u guys going to try it? im wondering if your running a refugium is there really a need to run bio-pellets. they kind of do the same thing minus the bacteria.

when i lost my first 2 sps corals my alk was way to high. 13-14 dkh. was my fault. all my other corals liked it that high.

SPS is all about a fat bank account.

If you have a fat pocket book, then you can do it.

I will probably not now that I have started liquid carbon dosing.

Try that, and then switch over. People have had success with that.

Before you start ANY carbon dosing however I would get the tank fully stocked, and with all of your filtration systems running at 100% (this includes that fuge if you do one)

This way you can see what your parameters are at to determine if you really need or want to do carbon dosing.

I started carbon dosing before building my ATF, or putting gracellaria, ulva, and caluerpa into my sump...which is still going to happen.

But I should have done it the other way around.

Or you can just be an aquaria keeping witch doctor. :D

only if u know what your doing.

im still on the learning stages of keeping sps's.

I killed my first fuzzy stick too. But it only took one, and that is what honestly got me focused in the hobby. I hate losing. :D

you definately do not have good luck.

i am doing the same thing with 1200gph overflow and mag 18. im only going to use 2-1400 gph powerheads.

i bought a mag 8 for 300g fresh tank with sand. had to take it out immediately, sand was everywhere.

do yourself a favor. if u do corals dont do sps's . i would take it all back if i could and stick with softies and lps's. sps's can be a huge headache. i love the looks of sps's but they are so touchy, i just dont have the time to dedicate to them that they need. just my opinion.

btw, if i didnt tell u yet. i like your setup.

im only going to do soft and lps in my 125 when its ready. i plan on moving my leathers over from my 30g. if i can get them out.

Thanks

problem for me is that my angels will pick at a lot of softies and lps, so I have to be selective. So far I have a few sps and seem to be having good success so far.

@Dustin... oh yea. Forgot. Already had a blue...guess I will just be trying to re-add the purple in like four weeks.

:D

@Mos SPS are da bomb...I cant wait for the whole top of my 125g to be covered. Stability is key man. I know when you lost yours you were experimenting with a lot of different high tech stuff. Once you get your reef set up the way you want it and running for a long period of time, try again. They can be super fun.

I think adding the purple last is your best bet. Hopefully it will work.

I occasionally look at that site. They have some pretty cool stuff and pretty good prices. I had already seen this pair and if I had a bigger tank they would already be mine. Same with the male scribbled angel they have.

this i true about the angels.

the larger the system the better for sps's.. i think most will agree. everything changes a lot slower. much more stable.

Wave maker as in actual waves in tank? I love the way that works, and the flow it creates...however...they say that that is bad for the joints/seems in glass tanks. So, just be careful with that.

Not to worried... as all in the past/future my tanks dont have joints, they are all solid construction 4 sides in wood/plywood covered with acrylic sheeting, with a single glass pannel on the front which is set in behind more wood, so unless moderate waves can break the glass or all my screws/glue Im not worried :P

The reason I like building tanks like this is 2 fold, one I can inset them into a wall perfectly, and two they are SOOO much cheaper lol.

Achilles is eating mysis already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am stoked!

I cant wait to be living in a place where I know I will be long enough to make an investment like this.

That being said, I am making a large (at least 8' long) plexi tank this summer at work, so that should be some good experience for the future.

Dustin, you worry too much. Of course it eats. Thats what animals do! :grinno:

Ha, good to hear...I wasnt too worried. Honestly my chevron tang was the hardest thing I have ever had to get onto prepared foods. And that wasnt too bad.
