Other beginner rays beside motoros?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know rays are a big commitment, Im getting a job to pretty much support them.

And I also know I didnt ask what they need, as I already know this. I was just asking what other types of rays would be good to start with besides motoros so I could have different options.

I posted a thread titled "Stingrays with Black arowana Q's" a while back and everyone pretty much suggested motoros, wich is what I planned to keep, but i just wanted to know other opinions of good first time rays.

Thank you all for your comments though, I am glad people have actually posted with such good information.

I plan to either get a pair of Motoros, or a pair of Hystrix, wich ever I find first, so it will most likely be motoros.

But again, thank you all for your comments and suggestions in helping me!

You may want to try a smaller ray to start, Motoro's are going to get at leats 24 inches across, & Hystrix are not being imported. I would suggest a humerosa but I have one who is 36inches across so that might not work.. Just be prepared for the ray to grow out of the 180...

I wouldn't be suprised if rvrrays starts to breed his hystrix in few months. Last time i checked he had some beautiful hystrix's that looked like they were going to be ready to breed in a while.

I have been bugging him for a while... I hope he does... I used to see hystrix at every store & I never bought any because I figured that they would be around for ever....... oops......

Well, it sounds promising. I have decided againt a pair, as It would be easyer to monitor a single ray and keep it in perfect condition, only thing I dislike about rays is that I kind of wanted to put some plants and pieces of driftwood, and with a ray, that isnt going to happen!

You can put all the frilly stuff you want in the tank, but the fact of the matter is if there is ANY possiblilty that food could be around the frilly, it will be moved to accomodate the BELLY.... get in my belly!!

I might put a piece of driftwood and plant java moss on it on one corner or something, but Im not really sure. I'm going to get some floating plants for the arowana so it has some good cover, but I'm probably not going to put a whole lot on the bottom as I want the rays to have as much swim space as possible. Hopefully I can find some Hystrix this summer though!

Unfortunately, I have not had any luck. I recently lost one of my large males (the female stabbed him with her spine). I see lots of interesting bite marks on my three females from the other male but nothing looks too promising. I am going to pound the live foods (earthworms and crayfish) this summer and see if that gives them a push in the right direction.

Attackfish - there are several dealers out there that have some really interesting Peruvian rays for sale. They are generally yepesi variants that are cheap ($50 - $85) and stay relatively small (less than 14"). I would give some of those a try.

Thanks for the help!

Although, if you do get your histrix do breed, I'd be interested in one or two...

I like yepezi's alot and I'll look around for other variants.

Once I move from my parents house (I'm 14...) I think Im going to try and build a large pond for a couple of rays, such as the one Miles built wich can be seen in the indoor ponds section.

So its either yepezi/yepezi variant, or histrix. Most likely yepezi as they seem more common, but If I can find a good deal on a histrix or two, I may pick them up..

Thanks all for the help!
