Question about Metro + Focus and feeding.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Leave the temperature alone. Increasing temps can lead to columnaris infection for an already health compromised fish.

Here is some.photos of how I am preparing his medicated food. I'm sure the dosage of metro he is ingesting is on the high side.

First place the 4 discs in warm water to soak for about 30-60 seconds. Softens it a bit and sets the food to help metro stick.

Remove from.water and dust each disc with the metro. Followed up with a health dusting of focus. Then drop in one at a time and he eats them instantly as the drop a few inches below the surface. I started doing this on Sept 6th, thinking of running a full 2 weeks then done.

after reaching out, i can't find anywhere near me to have a stool sample done after the metro treatment to ensure he is clear of parasites. not sure how I will be able to know other than watching for clear poops. I work a monday to friday job standard hours and obviously can't be watching him all day to see if all his poops are solid.

After 1 week of this dosage I am pretty sure he isn't pooping clear anymore. But I do see a random semi transparent poop thats brownish color which is the same color of his normal solid poops. normal length as well.

If its transparent at all is this still a sign of parasites?

there is a few small piles of poops in the tank since the last waster change / siphon and all of them are solid and look healthy. what are the odds they his gut could still have parasites?

My former GT would have clear poop once every 3-4 days, but then again he was the 3rd man on the totem pole of 3. So stress did play a part. I didn't see it coming out of him, it was just there when I cleaned the tank. However, a majority of the time (90%) the poop was colored. Sometimes the end of the poop did have a clear part.

If I recall correctly, his poop reminded me of pleco poo, much longer than a omnivorous/piscivorous type like oscar, bass, or pikes. I changed his diet to NLS Algaemax (more plant based) and I saw less of the clear lining as the months went on. They have a wafer version. I would recommend that over Hikari tropical wafers and see if that helps.

If you want to get a better look at the poop, slowly remove the substrate over the course of a week to see what is at the bottom of the tank.

All Kai's poops are good size and sit at the surface of the sand substrate. Easy to see it.

The transparent poops or clear stuff is lightweight and ends up being sucked up.my the filter.

I. Having a hard time distinguishing between parasite and just slightly different poop due to the type of food he is eating.

I keep thinking that if it was parasites that I would notice a higher percentage of his poops being clear and stringy and long.

Maybe a 1/4" diameter, why you ask? He eats 4 of them at a time 2 times a day.

I know I replied to this message last night. With all the double posts the site's been having mine doesn't go through once. lol

I was estimating how much metro was on the wafers in the photo. Yeah, I'd say the dose is on the high side. About how much metro would you say is on those four wafers in relation to a measuring scoop? I'm not going to tell you it's too much no matter how much it is ... I'm just curious.

I've never used focus. I thought it was just used to bind medicines to food. I didn't know it was also an antibiotic.

Honestly I have no clue how much is on it.

But what I did to kind of gauge my dosage was to do a test batch based on the measurements from.seachem. it states to add 1 measure of metro for 1 tablespoon of food.

So I took a tablespoon of the disc and wet them. Mixed in the 1 measure of metro and visually looked to see roughly how much metro was on each piece of food. Let me tell you it wasn't much at all. I am probably dosing 5-10time more then the recommended dosage for feed.

The way I see it is that I been fighting this thing for months now. I have no way to fully know how bad it is inside of him. Vortens can spread from.gut to blood to kidneys to liver and more.

All I do know if that metro is the best known med to kill it. I also know it's can cause damage in excessive amounts for long amount of time. But again I can't see inside my fish and I am watching him for at least an hour a day observing him behavior and seeing if I can spot signs of distress.

I definitely see an improvement. I'm at the home stretch of my dosing (2 weeks) and I figure I am going to see it through unless I can see outwards signs of stress.

I have a dosage of 1tbls of Epson salt per 5 gallons in there too. Daily poop siphon and massive very frequent water changes. Nothing left to do.
