Spearfishing Anyone?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
that is true...you can pick and choose you fish you want...netting everything gets taken...with spearing/shooting you can let the big females go and take the eatters...also if you see a sickly fish you can shoot it to remove it from the gene pool...you can't always catch fish that aren't heathy(to remove them)...

We used to throw on shorts and shoes and swim in the river w/ a mask, snorkle and a hawaiian sling. No barbs, so you had to shoot the carp, pin it to the bottom and keep the spearhead pointed to the surface. Or else they escaped. We shot carp and hardmouth. Both considered garbage that puts a damper on the native steelhead/salmon populations.

Same thing with us in michigan...we do it because you can literally watch the carp go sucking up eggs and or the clouds of fry...our ecosystem just cant handle them.

I started out spearing when I was six. My brother bought me a mask, and I would hang onto his shoulders while he dove down and would watch him shoot fish with a sling...Never had one myself, but have poked some fish with them.

I love to Freedive spearfish, illegal in fresh water in OZ though
I have put up a spear charter video that i took in the coral sea a few years ago, I came home form that 10 days with over 150kg of fillet and it was all eaten over the next 6 months. this is my best catch a 22.5 kg wahoo, acanthocybium solandri, kenn reef coral sea...

heres the link of the vid on you tube, i am on camera most of the time. if you think spearfishing is easy try holding an ikolite underwater video camera housing while filming and spearing a fish...watch and see...

<---------What do you think:)

I am really into freedive spearfishing. However, I dive the salt.
We mostly target Yellowtail Jack, Mahi Mahi, White Seabass, Halibut, and other pelagics in the summer.
During the winter we keep our skills up by shooting resident reef fish. Such as Calico Bass, Sand Bass, Halibut, and Sheephead.

bump as per request :)

That must have been a pain in the butt to take that off the gig.

Your not kidding, even with gloves its a painfull sting.. I usually with cut the barbs, before removal. I have to come back to shore to take it off. Any other fish I can just connect to my stringer on my hip.

The last thing you want on a stringer bumping into your legs is this little guy.
