Starting 55 Gallon Cichlid Tank - Input/Suggestions Appreciated

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lots of people on here recommend the sunsun can filters. There is a dude that posted his unboxing and review in the setup and filtration category about a week or so ago. I think it was the 304 model if I'm not mistaken. Seems like that size would suffice. More than half the price of the big brand names, and lots of people say it's a good filter. I think they are like 70-80 bucks for a pretty good size canister.

like everyone said a sun sun canister would be a good cheap addition to your tank especially with the added stock, but make sure you keep your old filter running as well so you dont loose your cycle. How long has your tank been running? Do you perform regular test and perform weekly water changes?
Your JD looks great, any pic of your new fish?

Yep, I posted the unboxing of my SunSun HW-303B that I bought on Amazon last week. I think it would be perfect for your 55 but if you can afford the larger 304B then I would go for it. They do not give you nearly as much flow as is advertised, once they are filled with media. Mine is rated at 370gph but once it is filled with media I am probably down to about 225gph. Also, if you get the package that includes media, it will not be enough media so be prepared to buy some more. Or, just get the empty canister and start from scratch in filling it with media.

Definitely well worth getting!

I will look into the SunSun, thanks everyone!
I took a few pics last night of my current stock:

As you can tell, my Oscar changed colors from pale white to dark dark tiger striped over the period of the 5-6 minutes I took pictures. He's hilarious! I'm going to get some pics of him hoarding food pellets...he'll get a mouth-full where you can literally see 3 or 4 sticking out. He's a brat.

I would also recommend checking out the Oddysea CFS500 on ebay. $53 with free shipping and it's empty flow rate is around 500GPH, I would guess full of media it'd be somewhere in the 320-350GPH range. Great filter for a great price.
