I always thought that the term referred to sex films but the op uses the term differently.

snuff movie refers to old VHS or reel to reel flicks ware they filmed some one being snuffed out, usually by torcher and usually a female.

smut flick, was a term for porno again VHS or reel to reel films, both old out dated terms.
