What do you HATE about fish keepers/keeping?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree with the elitists comments. I hate people like that. Those that care only about money, and their collections are all based on money alone. They think they're better than everybody, and their fish are better than everybody elses. These are not real fish keepers.

I realy dislike people that have realy nice tanks, but keep thier water line like 6 or 7 inches from the top of the tank for no good reason besides laziness.

My fiance (ThatFrontGuy) does that with our 55 gallon calvus tank that's in our bedroom- I will wake him up at 3-4am or whenever and tell him to fill the tank.

The noise drives me insane! :nilly:

I don't understand. If you are getting a fish directly from the breeder, you are undoubtedly getting a better fish, with a much higher chance at surviving the limited stress of being transported to your tank. Why would a breeder expect anything less? You mean to tell me you would rather pay more money at an LFS for stressed/sickly fish, and get better fish at a better (lower) price? Give some credit where credit is due.

Well, if you don't understand, I'll take another crack at it.

First of all, you say, "you are undoubtedly getting a better fish"... and I'd say, "bunk" to that. I've seen a LOT of poorly bred (and fed) fish come directly from the breeders. ...and "why would a breeder expect anything less". Well, the ones who do it for the money, ummm... do it for the money. A healthy interest in fish only goes as far as their wallet.

Over the years, I've bred 20 or 30 different species of cichlids, and I've GIVEN most of them away. The ones that I have sold, I've sold at no more than what the LFS would give me for them. Say... maybe a third of LFS price.

I bred the fish because I enjoyed the process, and I certainly didn't expect to make a profit... and I don't need to sell my fish for long dollar, in order to feel better about myself. Greed is greed... and to my way of looking at it, greed is bad. I'd rather find someone who'd enjoy them, and feel good about making their day. When I charge market rate, their money takes away my good feeling.

Hey... but I don't expect everyone to agree with this, but then again... This way of looking at the hobby is the way I find out who i want to do business with.

Just my 2 cents.

I guess I see where you are coming from. But here is the way I see it...I've tried selling fish. I've successfully only sold ONE fish, to a girl who I actually knew thru an aquarium club, but didn't realize it was her (sold thru craigslist.)

Everyone else that contacted me, either had an already over crowded tank, or didn't do water changes or whatever.

If I ever put my love, sweat, and tears into breeding fish, I better get SOMETHING out of it, especially since I know they will probably just kill it anyway.
