Dude...ahem...

I was in orlando seaworld...and saw one amazing 3ft plus long Silver arowana. A very very awesome specimen and with both severe drop eye. I can see that its aged and this arowana is kept in a huge panaromic tank ( u know, huge public aquarium type tank with awesome natural environment setup).

Asked the staff there about that silver and its claimed to be near 15 yrs old. I commented about the bad drop eye and was told to me that it developed that just only about 2 yrs ago...all the while in that tank.

The tank is fully gravelled...and fully made to look like nature's at its best.

So..what gives?

Hi Rocky

who knows how the aro was kept before it was put into the big tank the fish may have already started to train its eye to look down in a small tank but didnt start to get realy bad untill it was put into the lardge tank

And who knows maybe this aro's been kept in large decorated tank all the while also?

Dude...I see aros daily all my life...We breed aros here. We have aros grown in bare bottom tanks till adult with no drop eye problems at all. Not doubt some may develop..but not in 100% kindda statistic. We have more non drop eye aros here than having them develop drop eye in our tanks here.

so if it was genetic surely you would get a lot more aros with drop eye

it seams that silvers get it more but it is also silvers that are more widely kept

at the end of the day we pay a much higher price for our aros over hear so i will do everything posable to protect my investment

its different for you guys in SG if the aro has drop eye or PLJ you just sell it on and get another

its good that you are making precautionary measures to protect or to give your aro the best you can offer.

But there is no hard and fast rule that bare tank = drop eye

Infact we see more asian aros being kept here in Sgp than Silvers..but silvers always stands out having that problem more prominently.

In all honesty, i know that we cant really create natural aquariums in the truest sense I HATE bare bottom tanks. Arowana dont have bare on the bottom in the wild. The gravel wood and plants are good for the arowana psycologically.

for me as a good fishkeeper i think it is my job to provide the fish with as natural inviroment as posable and a bare botton tank is as fare from that as you can get at least with substrate i am trying to help the aro from not getting drop eye

with a bare bottom tank the only person the keeper is trying to help is them selfs

lots of people keep aros in silly size tanks like 4x2x2 or even smaller thease tanks are even to small for a asian aro let alone a silver tis along with a bare bottom tank cant help the fish as a large silver in a 4ft tank would need to start to turn again before it tail had even reached the end of the tank it had just come from

i think the reason we see drop eye more in silver aro is they are a much bigger fish

well i have a jardini thats about 6" with 7 Red Hook's in a 80 gallon while i set up my 6'-2'-2' 180 gallon and i was just curious on the bare tank cause i think it just looks plain and ****ty but so what your saying is as long as i'm willing to do all the cleaning and maintenence i'll be fine with gravel and some decor in my 180?
Id hit enter.

From my years of being in this aquatic business...I have seen alot of full grown black aros..but none have drop eyes at all.

So, bigger size = drop eye theory also does not stand.
