pics pls it's been a while since you have posted some of those brutes

In a day or so I will get some pics.

. I have them on a diet on the advice of Reagan. They are both fat and only have a viable spawn periodically.

I know it hurts but it will keep them with you for a long time.

How long can you expect to keep a good healthy pair? 10 Years?

And Reagan, I do have wigglers as we speak, only their second viable spawn so far.

How long? Depends on the male. Life expectancy for Reagan's females was about half a day with his old psychotic male! Hahahaha!

Seriously though, ten years wouldn't be hard to imagine based on life expectancy. I really don't know of anyone who's kept a pair together that long though. Usually tank size becomes a limiting factor, plus what do yoiu do with tens of thousands of fry every year?

Most commercial breeders use less than fully grown breeders just for space/economic reasons. You can get perfectly good fry from a 9" pair as from a pair twice the size, yet you can do so in about one-tenth the water and with much less food and need for maintenance. Plus, why not sell your huge breeder male for big bucks when he can so easily be cheaply replaced? It seems most of the really old fish are kept as single pets or "garbage disposals" by breeders with lots of fry to cull.

I've never really kept pairs of anything together long enough to see how long it'll work -- I generally don't want to deal with fry from any of my fish unless I have a reason to. So unless the fish are in a mixed tank where their fry will get eaten, I've never kept an isolated pair of anything together more than a few years.

My largest pair of dovii have been together for three of four years right now (having spent much of that time isolated in a breeding tank at a friend's house and the most recent year in a community situation). The male is almost 9 years old, and I don't know the age of the female, she was collected as a young adult in the wild so I'd guess she's about five years old. Their vitality is as strong as ever, so it appears several more years wouldn't be a stretch.

Well Chris these Dovi are pets, I ma not running some puppy mill for fish sir.:nilly: I would like to keep these guys healthy and together for many years. We will see how that works out.

If they need a bigger tank a couple years down the road, I could see buying them a 600 just for them.

Puppy mills WISH they could pump out babies like dovii can!

In your case, I'd net out most of the fry and leave just a handful with the parents. That'll keep them from immediately breeding right away (as they would if you pulled all the fry), and you won't end up with 2,378 three inch dovii to deal with!

Heres my 18" Nic, the thing to remember is although it looks blue, its actually green when lights is off. For some reason the lights makes doviis fins turn to blue color.

thx, he is a psycho. hits lid all the time, especially if he wants attention (food, or someone passes by, bored). One time he jumped out of tank, not sure for how long. I found him on floor somewhat dried up, put him back tank. An hour later he was crusing in the tank again in his *****y mood as usual.

Good looking Dovii....how long have you had him? Also wondering what size tank he is in? Hoping mine gets the personality you described yours as having.
