Oh, yeah, and you asked this question on a Monster Fish Keeping forum. Plenty of people are just gonna spout "GET A HUGE TANK NO MATTER WHAT BLAH BLAH BLAH...", but you need to think this through carefully.

this is just going to be a way way big of a step for a 14 year old who has a 20 or 40 gallon to go straight up to a 300 gallon which is far more for the experiece aquarist level...he should probably just either go with a 120,135,150,180,200,210 any of those but most likely a 180 if he wants big but he should just go with his next step as a 120 or a 135 or 150 before the big tanks...if he goes this way he has enough time to learn the responsibily to take care of a large tank from the smaller stages...because if he goes way too far in tank size he won't know what to do for a tank size that large

I'm not trying to pick on anybody, I'm just pointing out the massive size difference between the tanks that you have now, and the tank that you want to get. You can have a nice, small community tank that's about maybe 40G. Or 55G if you want it a little bigger. OR, you could go a little more to the monster side like me (not completely, just a little) and get yourself something that's about 100G. I'm gonna post some pictures to help you show the size of my tanks. The first is an empty 55G acrylic w/ some props for size. The second is the 55G next to the 100G. Now, picture how much a 300G would dwarf ALL of these tanks. It's too big of a jump, IMO. I went 10-->20-->55-->100. I think that a 55G would be just FINE for you. You could make it a FOWLR when your GSP hits full marine! Don't get me wrong- Big tanks rock, but I think that you need to test yourself with other, less massive tanks before you get yourself into anything that you might get bored of. How long have you been keeping fish?

don't worry we or he should feel that your trying to bully the one to find the good and humble answer by pointing out the main differences and some problems he may encounter to this drastic change in tank size from small to a more advance size who is monster...;)

I'd say even smaller, less than 80Gs IMO

but true if he has a 20 or 40 gallon but he can go very little steps like for atleast a 100 gallon just to get the feel of it...but remember its all our opinions which differentiate us all in different statures in what we do best in this hobby

Go with what your parents say. Or try to get them to take interest in the hobby. Perhaps they will want to get a 300 gal of their own, to put into their house. Meanwhile save up for the 500gal when you move out.

Yeah, most definately. I don't want to crush his dreams, but I also don't want him to dig himself into a big whole. I remember my jump from 55G to 100G was a big deal. I'd say you need something in between just to make sure you really, really, REALLY want to do this.

dear folks

fish tanks are great

they teach biology

responsibility

encourage junior to become friends with other fishkeepers which can lead to other opportunities

my 18 year old now works two full days a week at a local fish store and hopes to study marine biology

another parent ..........

i say buy the tank but do NOT set it up set it aside buy a 75-125gal set that up and make sure you can take care of that first b/c a 300 is a huge deal lots of time and work. You say you have a fish room you need to fill so if you get that 300 set it aside and get a 75 or so and set that one up to make sure you are good with a big tank. You will end up with your room almost done and hell you can get a 75 for lil of nothing
