yet another nurse shark post

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Going bigger. The wife and I are looking at a 700 plus Cube Aquarium. Thats one of my main points that I will agree is that most people do buy these sharks and don't realize that the do get bigger reguardless of the size of the tank. Thats the key thing. We have a Electronic store in CA called FRY's they have a 5ft Nurse in there display tank that is a Cylinder. I'm not saying that most people who look for sharks realize that the Nurse will get big. However there are a few that have the funds and can get tanks that could house a Nurse. I would say its to the LFS to inform before selling. I know in Cali. most LFS its special order. even the Whole sellers here say the same thing.

A 700 gallon will not last for very long either though. Not just upgrade to something that will last longer?

Not real worried about it right now. My wife and I only have less then a year left in cali the we are moving to North Carolina or Ohio where I will have around a 7200gal plus tank build. I see what your saying why not get a bigger tank now but as far as I see it right now the 400gal still gives her the room needed.

"Adult" Nurse Shark in Manila Ocean Park

"Young" nurse shark. Based on size, I'd guess that one to be 3 or 4 years old tops. ;)

Average adult size is twice that.

Hmmm......lets see, 5-1/2' diver, 7' Nurse Shark. 3-4 years old? NOT!

Show me ONE pic of a 14' Nurse Shark!

Looking at that pic, I'd say 5 or 5 1/2 feet for that nurse. Pelvic fins are close to the waist of the diver in that shot. Tail's tip would be about at the feet of the person.

Cant say anything about length...but both of the nurse's pictured looked pretty chubby...as far as ones Ive seen in the wild. I dont care what you put in an aquarium as long as you can keep it healthy (physically and mentally).

Actually most sources say a Nurse Shark(Ginglymostoma cirratum) cam reach that big. But as far as actually reliable confirmed recordings - the Maximum size seem to be about 12' long.

But then Nurse Sharks aren't truely maturity until they reach about 7-7.5'. And most adults tend to average about 8-10'.

This past summer I visited a boardwalk aquarium in Wildwood N.J. where they had two nurse sharks in a large tank. These sharks looked to be close to,if not, ten feet in length.

Underwater Adventures Aq in Minnesota had a nurse shark well over 9 feet until shortly after I left.
We've got several 9 ft plus here in the collection.

I think grow out tanks will stun growth of a nurse as well .... Meaning the nurse would be like 12ft long if it was in a 20000 gallon tank to begin with , but if you slowing kept buying tanks as it grew it probly would only max out around 6 -7' reasonably... i think this 14ft 12ft and 10ft , for a PERSONALLY owned nurse is bs..... or very rare.

I see these sharks at my LFS being sold all the time. I shake my head and wonder if the idiot that buys them has any idea..... Man i wish i could buy a couple of them and have enough space to take care of them.

30 year old bumblebee grouper died in his home reaching only 4.5ft 120 pounds... they dont get as large as they should , most of the time not even close.

The species(bumblebee grouper) can grow as large as 2.7 meters (9 ft) long, weighing up to 600 kg (1320 lb); there are unconfirmed reports of it growing much bigger...... it just doesnt happen with captive animals , especially SW fish and sharks
