Hello; The laws vary from state to state in the USA. Some have been such that a person is expected to leave their home and run away if someone breaks in and threatens them and are not supposed to defend their home. Other states allow for defense from intruders only inside a home. Florida has a stand your ground law that, as I understand it, allows a person to defend themselves wherever they may be when they fear for their life. People do not have to run away or do some of the other things when confronted with physical force.
To answer your specific question, no a person cannot hunt someone else just to shoot them. The story here appears to be that Zimmerman did not pull his gun and use it untill after being attacked. Both Zimmerman and Martin likely had the right to be where they were. It seems that the jury believed that he was entitled to defend himself.
Did Z have the right to carry a concealed weapon? Yes
Did Z have the right to follow what he deemed a suspicious person? Yes
Did Z have the right to get out of his car to follow said person? Yes
Did Z have the right to confront said person? Yes
Did Z have the right to defend himself when attacked? Yes
Did Z have the right to use lethal force once he felt his life was threatened? Yes
Should Z have followed someone he deemed suspicious? Yes
SHOULD Z have gotten out of his car to follow said person? Probably not
SHOULDZ have confronted said person once out of the car? Probably not
SHOULD Z have defended himself when attacked? Yes
SHOULD Z have used lethal force once he felt his life was threatened? Yes
Either way you look at it according to Florida law he didn't do anything illegal.

How is it you forget Zimmerman was the Nightwatchman captain in his gated community. There had been recently many breakends thefts in the neighborhood. Treyvon did not live there he was a stranger in this community. Yes is was his job to investigate any strange unknown people walking around in the dark. You say Zimmerman profiled Treyvon. Probably as a suspecious looking person in Zimmermans neighborhood. Treyvon profiled Zimmerman telling his girlfriend on the phone that some White cracker ass is following him around. Both not knowing who each other was. So when they both finally met up what made Treyvon attack Zimmerman and beat the heck out of him. Because he was following him? that's a justification to beat someone up. You say Zimmerman put himself in that situation so he deserves to get beat have his nose broken his head pounded into the sidewalk. He was only doing his job keeping his community safe at night. Yes its a tragedy Treyvon got killed. You can't go around beating people up if you do make sure there not carrying a gun.
