Help with sump set-up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry I'm multitasking and should have elaborated. I have done a bunch of research for both but it seems as though everyone tweeks these things there own way and I would like to try and gather as much information from you guys (the experts) from personal experience. I appreciate your help thanks for the links

Here's a good read for you... lays it all out pretty simply:

We use stand pipe Durso's in our fish room by the way, but you are on the right track with herbie and bean drains. We have much lower flow rates than you'll need/have.

This hobby is all about trial and errors, there will be more errors than anything and with that we learn from it! Take everything everyone has suggested and figure what will work best for you, your building the tank not us. What works for us might not necessarily work for you and vise versa. We can all post suggestions and advice but this build is yours! There is a world of info between this site and the members as well as YouTube.
I did my research and watched plenty of videos and built my sump and did all the plumbing on my tank just by reading, watching videos and checking out everyone else's build on this forum.

Cheers

I'm going to post a picture of my sump design for your critique if you guys don't mind but I really need to know if you have experience with placing your heaters in a horizontal position in your sump? The instructions say vertical for my EHEIM JÄGER 300W (model 3619)

Yes, I always place my heaters horizontally in my sumps. Pretty much all the instruction manuals say not to. Never had an issue. Can't wait to see your design...especially considering I kinda started this mess for you...lol

Thanks and yes you sure did. I'm going to start a new thread showing my stand, sump, overflow and aquarium design soon.

Not sure about eheim's but here are my AquaTop's

Horizontal, on the bottom, gives more contact between the coldest water in the tank and the heating element in a standard tank. It also keeps the heating element fully submerged should you be doing large water changes. And it's sometimes easier to hide. AND it sometimes puts the heater in a safer location given that big fish might run into it etc. hanging on the wall of the tank. I have personally had big cichlids that took exception to the heater dangling in the tank, but left the heater alone one laid on the bottom.

In a fast flowing sump such as you are working on, factors such as the best utilization of space and aligning the heaters with the current are likely the primary concerns.

I believe that the instructions say to install vertically in order to minimize the water pressure that the heater experiences. Increased water pressure = increased likelihood of failure.

Here's my rough mock up of the sump and definitely feel free to suggest changes haha. First chamber will have two 1.5" (maybe 2") drains with filter socks. Second chamber will have ceramic media on egg crate to keep it slightly elevated. It will have the 2" emergency drain and two heaters. The next baffle allows water to direct down through green matala filters and out the bottom into the third chamber. Third chamber will have two Jeboa DCP 18000's with 1" returns. Sump is 72x18x22" and first and last chamber will likely be 16" width. Forgive my drawing skills in advance . . .

Your drawing skill is just fine :) Nothing is jumping off the page as patently incorrect except the water level in your pump chamber.

Thanks and I only noticed the water level after I posted the picture haha I'm not busting out the crayons and redoing it tonight but ya it will be the same as the middle chamber and obviously change when the pumps kick on
