Help Bichir sick :(

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's definitely improved.

My suggestion is cont with water changes every 2-3 days with a dechlorinator. No more salt. What's being done is working.

Big thing is it's gotta eat. I believe it has to do with low temperatures. Tropical fish in low temps will have a decreased metabolism and feeding. This has to be corrected. Once it starts to eat it'll get better much faster. So get a heater.

okay i can probably get one this week. But in the mean time, can i add boiled water to it (i have a thermometer) until it reaches 77-80 degree water? also the water feels around room temperature so not sure if water temp is a problem. also after feeding do i change the water to lower the ammonia? I feed him frozen tilapia as well as frozen prawn that i get from the freezer areas in my local supermarkets. I am trying to soak them with garlic so he will think its more appetizing. Should I gut them into small pellets and let it marinade with the shrimp to enhance flavor or should i mass it to tiny microscopic pieces and then marinade it also would buying food flavor enhancers at the fish stores be worth it or should I just stick to using garlic.

thxs so much!

Would try to do a water change the next day. Or feed early morning and water change in the evening. That still requires to check your water.

I think if you can keep temps consistent around what it should be then it'll eat without garlic or any stimulant. I would try without any garlic and see the response. If you want to do it then just garlic should be good.

I wouldnt add boiling water keep the water temps the same when doing wc's the fluctiluations may do more harm than good. But.you definitly should be adding the heater

Can you add some substrate it may make the fish settle down a bit. I really would treat with meds yet

Be patient, it's not been that long since he was hurt.

I agree - consistent temps are better than ups and downs - if you add warm water it will just cool back down. Get a heater asap.

okay i will get a heater, for the substrate, i always kept it bare bottom for maintenance bt had rocks and stones and some wood to accommodate for that. I still think its better to just leave it as is. With the food, he eats weirdly when I got him... He would not touch the food when I place it in and then eat it after like an hour cause in that time i check and he has a big belly lol. Is this a problem? I know when I got him they fed him feeders. Should I go and buy rose red minnows from petco and quarantine them and feed him that?

what you guys think.

as of health wise, he has more finage on his fins and looks a lot better.

thxs,

Ray

No feeders. Easier to get a staple pellet instead which should be taken regularly. Slow to eat can be temp issues. Something that keeps coming up in posts. Once it's healed up then look at the big belly.

Will get better soon. Wait it out and do water changes and up the temps.
