JD tank would be cool too, not something I see done as often as the firemouths. Hoplo cats should be fine, just get them at a larger size if possible. JD's don't grow all that fast but if it fits in the mouth, it's gone. If you can't guarantee sexes of the fry (unlikely) I would start with a few more than that, especially since the genetics of the blues (not sure about gold) are pretty poor, might lose some.

So if you all don't know yet I got another 125gal 6ft tank. I was shooting for another TruVu acrylic but they never replied so instead I got a glass one that has never been used.

The stand is homemade but is a beast. It weighs more than the tank by far. It has a 2x4 4x4 frame with marine grade oak plywood and real oak trim.

In July I am going to get an FX4 for it. And the following month the substrate, background, heater, fish.

So I think I have narrowed it down to three tank setups.
1) African cichlid
This would be an all male tank. Peacocks/Haps bought as adult males from The Wet Spot

2) Platinum Jack Dempsey tank
I would get six or so fry from Yankeejack grow out a pair giving away the extras to local MFK members. There would be Swordtails as dithers. No bottom feeders at first till I get a few spawns so no chance of them eating eggs fry.

3)Firemouth tank
Get 7 each meeki and aureus or pasionis. Then either a tall bodied tetras for a dither or get more Roseline sharks to add to the three I have now. Six pictus cats for bottom feeders or Corries. Would be a planted tank with some rocks driftwood very natural looking tho may not be an actual biotope due to both sharks and catfish are not central. Could go Biotope route if any suggestions for dithers and bottom feeders FMs are with in the wild.

NICE tank!
I want this tank and stand...!

I’m biased and vote for the mix of JDs from yankeejack.

Though the JDs are barely seen in my tank, but I’m sure your aware of that, having owned them before....I’m starting to nick name mine the sharks bc I’m looking at my tank and I see the dorsal fins go through the plants but don’t actually see the fish lol

I am thinking I will add my Roseline sharks to the JD tank. They look to be getting a bit big for the 55. They are around 5in long now eyeballed not measured. It seems they can't really swim now that I added all the fish/plants/decor from the 20gal to it.

What do you all think of red head Tapajos Geo's as bottoms feeders instead of a catfish. These only get like 6in right not to big. Maybe 6 for the 125?

I have 5 in my current set up, they were tiny and had been sitting around in a dodgy shop for monhs before I got them, they never have got to what I expected them to be but have improved a lot. They are an amusing fish to have, always squabbling among themselves and don't bother the acaras but I'm not sure they could, stand up to an aggressive J.D.

I wouldn't consider them a replacement for catfish, they won't fill the same niche. They are cichlids and will be seen as competition by the JD's. Might be do-able but personally I would go with the catfish, and let the JD's shine as the only cichlids
