My understand is that convicts are alright so long as they don't pair and start breeding. Yes, CA cichlids will cross with relative ease but that doesn't mean it will for sure happen either. I actually just picked up 3 Denison barbs and 3 red rainbows to go with my red severum so he can get used to them for when he moves up to his 75 in the next 6 weeks. Point being, yes I think rainbows make ok dither, but I'm about to learn first hand.

Any dither fish you add will eventually be eaten, so I wouldn't bother. All three fish have the potential to be terrors, so just I would leave the convict and see what happens.

I personally love blue acaras and would trade out the convicts myself just because I like the blue acaras best.

Buenos Aires Tetra I see them at petco some times. They are fast and get to be 3" that's a good size. My blue acara did eat a few tetras that I did not think he could . He was 4" and ate 1.5" tetras.

Thank you all for replies. Speaking aggression wise, will a blue acara survive with jd and fm if the convict is removed

I wouldn't add any cichlids to your tank because you don't know the personality of any of your current fish. Your cichlids will mark out territories in your tank when they are older and a 75 gallon doesn't have a lot of room for multiple territories. Hopefully they don't mate and cause chaos in your tank.

the jack dempsey was being very aggressive towards the other two so i was originally planning on keeping the jd and taking the other two back, but i stumbled upon two larger jd's about 5-4 inches each. so i took back all the original fish and brought home the two larger jd's. the owner told me that the lady that brought them in said they were killing everything in her tank, so it looks like a pair. im planning on just keeping those two with a pictus, and dithers.
can someone confirm if this is a male female combo or did i bring home two males. if they are both males will i have a problem if its just these two? the three pics of a single jd is the one i think is a female although im not sure. in the pic with the two jds the larger one is the one i think is a male
thanks
p.s they are getting along completely well right now. just thought i'd mention that in case it means its a pair

Kinda hard to see but what your looking for is males will have more body plating and a female will have more blue beard.

need a better pic of the would be male, but I'm fairly certain the one you think is female is infact a female. imo the beard is the easiest way to tell. while some males will even have beards the "spangles" will all be seperate, like polka dots. A female will have spangles that blend together, giving a look like the female you've shown above.

I just can't tell by the brightness of the body paneling, maybe I'm blind lol.
