Growing up blue

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The two regular JDs are definitely female, their blue beards are starting to come in, yay!!!

They are also growing quite a bit! Still haven’t taken actual measurements yet.

They are hard to photograph as they are very active, and every time I go near the tank everyone is begging for food.

The two guppies have all passed, one was harassed and leaped out of the tank while I was at work and the other one was harassed and found dead in the tank with missing parts. Needless to say no more guppies will go in this tank.

Mollies are doing fine, I was thinking about adding a third female.

Today I have decided to sell one of the EBJDs, he is the smallest of the three and is getting chased the most.

He might be going into his own tank here this week until he is rehomed.

The fish should be getting old enough to pair off, so you might see an EBxJD pairing soon.

I've found that having other JD's in the tank seem to help the pair-bond. Fortunately, you have a 75 gallon tank, which should be enough room for the other fish to escape. Once you have a solid pair, the other fish will be on the other side of the tank.

Is that EB getting torn up -- looks ok in the pic. If you tank out the runt, someone else has to become the runt -- just a thought for you to chew on.

no the runt isn’t getting torn up, he’s doing just fine except for sticking to one side of the tank.

I know I have two female regulars and two males EBJD, I’m pretty sure I can see the two that will form a pair and they are both the ones I like the least, the dominant female might be going as well, she has very nice colours but a horrible body shape. And I’m pretty sure two uglies don’t make good looking babies haha...I’m also debating keeping two pairs so I can cross their babies back to the unrelated EBJDs

The two biggest males are just pushing the 3inch mark I believe, hey still seem pretty small to me.

Aggression wise everything is pretty mellow, only one split tail between the 5 of them

Take the one out that you don’t like. Give the one you like the best chance.

If they are 3”, they are at breeding size.

Should happen soon!

Your right, I posted the female for sale and the runt is for sale.

I took them out today and measured them, they are 3” exactly...I’m pretty excited

Tonight I have sold the short/fat female regual Dempsey. I’m down to 4 in total.

My dominant male seems to be sulking a little tonight and my three less dominant JDs have been having a blast and in the tank.

I’m also still going to sell the runt too, though it might take a while.

Then I will be happy if either male pairs up with the current female (the current female has darkened up a lot since the other female is gone)

If you are willing to sacrifice the runt for the sake of getting a pair ... I've found that having sub-dominant males in the tank helps strengthen the pair-bond. Just have to be ready for the sub-dominant males to get terrorized!

I’m not sure I have the heart to sacrifice him, I’m a softie haha

Though since selling the dominant female, the male I want to breed has become tank boss I believe...not sure how he did it but he does have a little scratch on his snout, defending the big wooden cave, unfortunately he doesn’t seem to be taking a shining to the remaining female....might go purchase another regular jd this week (regular JDs are easy to sell in my area, I’ve sold three already) blues seem difficult to sell

I’ve also bought two more mollies today, they are in quarantine atm
