Fish Room Build Thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Some friendly advice.. I would triple the amount of bio (k1 or better yet k3) you have planned. As your stock grows (esp. the stingray) you may find that your bio will be lacking and it's better to start with enough bio instead of upgrading afterwards. Perhaps consider adding an Ultima 2 as backup/supplemental filter. I used to house over 30k gallons of fish tanks... now I have about 5000 total gallons. :)

Hi and thank you for the advice! I really need it at this stage.

For the ray tank the following will be used (as for now)
- 30 gallons of submerged media, Seachem matrix and sponge, (actual media volume)
- 20 gallon of K1 (actual media volume)
- dual drip tray 13 gallon container volume (mostly for oxygenation)
- roll filter for immediate removal of debris from the water column
- 10% daily water changes

Is this sufficient?
I’ve tried to look up the amount of food rays demand but the info seems hard to come by. This filter setup should be able to handle quite a lot of food but I know the problems with rays osmolation(so?) and their excessive production of ammonia.

Please advice ??

If this was for a single male ray.. you may get away with it. I would bump up the drip to 15-20% daily if the stock is a bit heavier. And I would still use more K3.. Pound for pound , rays will produce more waste compared to other fish. How many rays were you planning on having in the tank? Also what kind of ray? :)

For real? 1 ray?

I’ve seen people stocking rays with 2x2260 Eheims and be happy with it ?

I’m planning 1:3 or 2:3 leopoldis/pearls but it seems like I might have to revise that big time ?

I could potentially double the amount of K1 but still 30 gallon of submerged media should make quite a big mark on the nitrification process as well...

Just to be clear, I know that they will outgrow, but I have a plan for that. Stage 2 of the fish room in 4-5 years ??

I would advise you to triple the amount of K3 .. upgrading will be much harder after your system is setup. Do not underestimate the waste produced by a group of rays! 5 pups are easy for your current filtration plans to handle but after a year or two, you will be thanking me for this piece of advice. Hahaha with the Eheims, the guy must be doing 50% water changes every other day.

I ran 7x 275 gallon totes on one of my systems... started with 3 totes but soon realized it wasn't enough, ended up with 7 totes x 275 gallons each. 2000 gallon daily drip for this system alone plus a big UV and 2x big Ulitma II's one rated at 10,000 gallons and the other at 6,000. So I had around 800 gallons of K3 media on about 15,000 gallons of water and it was barely keeping up.

A minor hickup scheduling wise.
The sanding and priming took longer than expected so the painting won’t be done until monday/Tuesday and flooring until Thursday/Friday. Damn midsummer!

But I rather do it proper. The interior walls will be classified and a wet space according to Swedish code. All the seams between wall sections is caulked and the ceiling as well.

Now the backgrounds are ordered and paid for.

The Amazonian for the big tank and the rocky/muddy one for the small tank.

The backgrounds will cover the back and the side panel with the overflow. The other side panel will be painted black so I can accommodate the power head in the side.

Thank you!
Due to me wanting a wet space standard it’s
OSB
Drywall
Wet space spackel
2 x wet space primer
2 x wet space paint
Glass fibre strips at every joint
Caulking in all seams and corners

The paint is completely flat carbon/anthracite and non-reflective So I can see the tanks and the TV perfectly with no reflections (like that will happen?)

All electrical outlets will be anthracite as well to blend in
